If we let government run government then we, the public, will eventually succumb to oppression and coerced silence. It is important to recognize the sequential steps to becoming a casualty of an authoritarian-style regime led by a self-proclaimed supreme ruler and its loyalists.
Some of the signs to watch for are: nepotism, in which surrounding oneself with loyal kin that will do what’s best for them and their family. People will also desert an unstructured group and seek the order of a punishing regime which has the authority to identify and reprimand cheats. Create an enemy when the position as leader becomes insecure. Get rid of political enemies. Instigate a monopoly on the use of force to curb public protest. A dictator who restores order, even through coercion, is likely to earn the gratitude of his base.
Control the media in all forms. And lastly, an authoritarian figure will usually create an ideology to justify or legitimize their power.
It is imperative to note that once democracy has been vanquished, it is very unlikely to return!
