GREENFIELD – A 36-year-old man from New York was arrested Saturday on motor vehicle and drug charges following a police chase that started on Interstate 91 and ended at the Stop & Shop gas station.

According to Massachusetts State Police spokesperson Dave Procopio, the incident began at around 3:48 p.m., when a state trooper on Interstate 91 northbound in Deerfield spotted a car that police in Connecticut had tried unsuccessfully to stop a few days earlier. The trooper attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver allegedly refused to stop.

“An MSP sergeant ahead of the pursuit deployed a tire deflation device across the road, and the fleeing suspect’s car hit the spikes, causing tire damage,” Procopio wrote in an email.

Despite the damage, the man continued to drive north before exiting the interstate, according to Procopio. When a trooper found him at the Stop & Shop gas station on Bernardston Road, the man allegedly attempted to flee from the vehicle, but police subdued him.

According to Procopio, a small amount of narcotics were found in the vehicle. The man was taken to the Massachusetts State Police Shelburne Falls barracks for booking on motor vehicle and drug charges.

The exact charges, as well as the man’s name, are not yet available. This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
