DEERFIELD — Monday’s election will have contested races for seats on both the Planning Board and Board of Assessors.

Four candidates are running for two seats with three-year terms on the Planning Board, said Town Clerk Barbara Hancock, and two candidates are vying for one seat on the Board of Assessors. Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

In the race for Planning Board, Steven L. Pistrich, Analee Wulfkuhle and Denise Larsen Mason are challenging incumbent Henry Komosa.

Mason, a resident of Deerfield for 30 years, is the director of economic development at Southeastern Vermont Community Action, where planning is an integral part of her job, according to her candidate bio. Prior to that, she worked with various community development corporations in the Pioneer Valley teaching business development.

Mason said she is running for a seat on the Planning Board because she wants to see more “thoughtful growth” in town.

“I think it’s a wonderful town, and I’m really looking for some thoughtful growth,” Mason said. “I want our town to be resilient and green.”

She said this includes approaching development from a more environmentally friendly perspective.

Analee Wulfkuhle, who has lived in Deerfield for 11 years, said she has been attending Selectboard and Planning Board meetings for several years. She also attended the climate resiliency meeting held earlier this year at Frontier Regional School.

“At the end of that, I really was motivated to see what I could do to better align the visions that we have for Deerfield with some of our Planning Board decisions,” she explained.

Wulfkuhle said she supports local initiatives and wants to encourage projects that are friendly to the environment.

“I think it’s time for someone with a fresh perspective to take a turn, so I’m stepping up,” she said.

Pistrich and Komosa did not return emails or calls requesting comment.

Also on the ballot is a contested race between Timothy Hilchey and incumbent Francis Sobieski for a seat on the Board of Assessors. Sobieski currently serves as chair of the board.

In non-contested races, Selectboard member Trevor McDaniel is running for re-election; Deerfield School Committee member Kenneth Cuddeback is running for re-election; Melissa Novak is running for a seat on the Frontier Regional School Committee; and Daniel Graves is seeking re-election as town moderator.

Tilton Library has three seats open for the role of trustee. Marjorie Shearer is running for a seat with a three-year term; Kathleen O’Rourke is running for re-election to a seat with a two-year term; and James Cambias is running for a seat with a one-year term. All candidates are uncontested.
