GREENFIELD — Mayor Roxann Wedegartner and City Council President Ashli Stempel have appointed seven members to be part of a City Charter Review Committee.

According to Article 8 of the city charter, a periodic review calls for a review of the charter by a special or standing committee of the City Council in every year ending in zero. The committee must “file a report within said year recommending any changes in the charter, which it may deem to be necessary or desirable.”

The committee consists of Council Vice President Otis Wheeler, At-Large Councilor Christine Forgey and Precinct 6 Councilor Sheila Gilmour, as well as David Singer, Allen Wood, John Lunt and Erin Donnelley Drake, according to a press release from the Mayor’s Office.

The committee met for the first time on May 28 and elected Singer as chair and Wheeler as vice chair.

According to the release, the committee will first review and discuss the articles of the charter with input from city employees and board members. Once this review is complete, the committee will review public input and schedule a public hearing.

The public is welcome to send written comments, suggestions and communications to the committee in an email to 2020charterreviewcommittee@greenfield-ma.gov or in a letter to the 2020 Charter Review Committee c/o the City Clerk’s Office, 14 Court Square, Greenfield, MA 01301.

The public is also invited to watch meetings of the City Charter Review Committee, which are posted on the Greenfield city website under “Charter Commission.”
