Self-interest thrives in a society of interwoven dependencies. Without this social fabric, self-interest devolves into a survival of the fittest free-for-all. Even the staunchest cheerleaders of self-interest depend on a society of laws and mutual self-interest. My neighbor’s welfare is my welfare. I rely on my neighbors to make smart, healthy decisions. These protect me, my children, those I love, and all citizens. I reciprocate by doing the same. That is civilization.
Would those who choose to accept no responsibility for the welfare of others prefer to live the wild, where there are no hospitals, no schools, no libraries, no roads, no grocery stores, no post office, no Amazon delivery service? That is always an option for them.
