Through the end of the month, runners can support a good cause virtually, as Rachel’s Table’s Outrun Hunger 5K race and fun walk is welcoming participants from throughout Western Massachusetts until May 31.
Competitive athletes can run a real-time 5K race and upload their time in order to win or place, while anyone who just wants to move and support the community can register for non-competitive participation.
Participants can run, walk, step, dance, or create any physical self-challenge to help the cause. The self-challenge can be done from inside your own home — up and down stairs, doing an online calisthenics class, or whatever you do to keep physical during this time.
All proceeds from the required entrance fee will be donated to Rachel’s Table’s programs that feed the food insecure and the growing unemployed. These include the Backpack Program, milk runs, and delivery of the fresh produce that families desperately need. Rachel’s Table continues to feed people every day in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin Counties. Entrance fees are $20 for self-challenge and $25 for the competitive race.
Registration is at runsignup.com/Race/MA/Springfield/OutrunHunger5k
Emerson at Middlebury
Deerfield native Zeke Emerson was honored by Middlebury College, as the school recently recognized nine seniors at its annual athletic awards ceremony which took place via Zoom this year.
The senior captain for the Middlebury men’s lacrosse team was honored with the Murphy Roberts Memorial Award, given to the Middlebury varsity athlete who inspires teammates with the selflessness, enthusiasm and team spirit demonstrated by Murphy Roberts, Class of 2017.
Emerson was a senior captain for the Panthers on the lacrosse field and a four-year member of the team. This season the team was off to a solid 3-0 start before the cancellation of the season due to COVID-19. As a junior, the defenseman tied a school record with five caused turnovers in a game and his 20 in 2019 placed him fourth on the single-season season list.
