SHELBURNE FALLS — Retiring Senior Center Director Cathy Buntin was busily working on her computer in her office on her last day on Friday when she was summoned outside by coworkers for a surprise drive-by retirement party.
“I’m blown away! You guys set me up!” the surprised Buntin exclaimed as a string of vehicles drove by, the drivers honking their horns and shouting greetings.
Organized by fellow Senior Center staff members Dot Lyman, Gloria Fisher and Leanne Dowd, as well as Buntin’s daughter Tasha, the parade started from the Trinity Church parking lot. Starting at 11 a.m., led by fire trucks, the procession made its way past the Masonic Hall that houses the Senior Center.
“I’ll hug you later,” the 14-year retiring director told many as she recognized the familiar faces streaming. A few people pulled down their face masks momentarily so Buntin could recognize them, but most were greeted by name with a smile.
“First on my list is to spend some time with my parents, and to spend time biking and kayaking with my children,” Buntin said when asked about her retirement plans. She has a daughter, Tasha, 23, and a son, Alex, 25.
After the last vehicle drove by, Buntin remarked, “It was so great to see them all,” referring to the many members of the Senior Center who participated in the parade.
“I was so sad I wouldn’t get to say goodbye, it was breaking my heart. It is good to know they are well,” she added. “I’ll miss them, but I’ll be back to visit.”
