I have been a dedicated reader of the Recorder since I moved to Massachusetts 13 years ago. I am not one to write to a newspaper, but I can’t take it anymore. My complaint is shared by many others and so I felt it was time to say something. I realize these are tough times, but the Recorder has been printing pages in black and white that should be in color.
The type of print in the Saturday comics indicates that it is obviously supposed to be in color. Okay, there is no loss of comedy with it in black and white. I can live with that, but the most important page that HAS to be in color is Bill Danielson’s “Speaking of Nature” on the Outdoors page.
The article is all about the colors of birds and their markings as well as his musings about the outdoors, and even has a Photo Contest section at the bottom — that is now being printed in black and white. As an example, the April 20 edition has a photo described as “the goldfinch’s yellow feathers are starting to come in.” Well, that might be beautiful — if we could actually see it! The same goes for Andy Castillo’s picture of moss on a rock that was printed in an earlier edition in a different section of the paper. It was in black and white and just looked like a rock — maybe. It was hard to tell.
In the same issue with the goldfinches, the sports page which is on the same sheet of paper that goes through the press, is in full color. Why isn’t the other half of the page in color? If you need to pick only half a page in color, the clear choice should be Bill Danielson’s side of the page.
Please, please consider these things when making choices for color in our newspaper. Thank you.
