TURNERS FALLS — The local basketball season got a new addition at Franklin County Technical School on Tuesday night.

The Franklin County Varsity Sports Report sponsored a pair of high school basketball All-Star games giving local athletes another chance to get some burn with their respective teammates and opponents from the season.

Bobby C. Campbell, host of the Varsity Report, helped make the event happen.

“I ended up deciding that because of the situation we had with none of our teams going to the Cage that this was a little opportunity for a showcase,” Campbell said. “I thought this was a great way to get all these younger kids together.”

The evening started with the girls game, with Team Bobby C defeating Team Ben Johnson, 45-26.

Campbell was vocal on the sideline.  Substitutions came in mass waves for both teams.

Jeff Tirrell, who was scheduled to coach against Campbell, missed the game having to work an early shift on Wednesday morning. Ben Johnson, coach of the Greenfield Middle School girls team,  took over for the evening.

Greenfield’s Katie Haselton led all scorers with 12 points for Team Bobby C.

“It was fun getting back on the court,” Haselton said. “Just moving the ball and having fun.”

Team Bobby C outscored Team Johnson 14-2 in the third quarter to pull away.

Racquel Provost (Team Bobby C) scored five points and at one point in the second half dove on the floor for a loose ball.

“Going all out for it,” Provost said. “It was a great time to work with other girls from other schools. It was a  game where we could all come together and have fun.”

Greenfield teammate Bryanna Rivera was not shy with her shot selection, and finished with six points for Team Bobby C.

Rivera had a crossover move in the second half that wowed the crowd in attendance at Franklin Tech.

Franklin Tech’s Isabelle Duga (Team Johnson) got a great opportunity to play with some of the best players in Franklin County.

“It was pretty cool,” Duga said. “It was a lot different than playing with your normal team. You gotta work with it. You don’t have plays.”

Duga had some nerves at the beginning of the game but settled in scoring five points with a 3-pointer.

“At first there was a little (nerves),” Duga said. “But once you start playing it all went away.”

Frontier’s Marie Diemand (Team Bobby C)  played with her teammates, Kaitlyn Mackin and Amelia Sobieski for the last time.

“I appreciate the extra chances I get to play,” Diemand said. “It was really nice to play with Kaitlyn and Amelia.”

Sobieski scored 10 points for Team Bobby C. Kendra Campbell, of Turners Falls, enjoyed the opportunity to play.

“It was a new experience I never got to feel,” Campbell said. “Just being able to play another game was amazing. It was nice to feel that jolt of being back on the court.”

Mohawk’s Grace Poplawski (Team Johnson) relished the opportunity to play with teammates Stella Clark and Grace Ward one more time.

“I was excited to play with a couple members of my team,” Poplawski said. But also these are people we have been playing against for so many years. It was fun to actually be on a team with them.”

Pioneer’s Paige Loughman led Team Johnson with eight points. Pioneer teammate and senior Stephanie Scoville did not know about the game when the Panthers’ season ended.

“It definitely was a nice surprise to play with my teammates again,” Scoville said.

Scoville scored four points for Team Johnson.
