Thank you to Jack Lochhead for his op-ed on March 3, regarding the complexities of forestry management, carbon reduction and the health of our New England environment.

The environmental reading group at the Northfield Dickinson Library took on this question most recently by reading a pamphlet prepared by Paul Catanzaro and Anthony D’Amato of the UMass Amherst and University of Vermont respectively (see “Forest Carbon: An essential natural solution to climate change”). Their booklet provides an excellent visual and text explication of both carbon sequestration and carbon storage and offers some guidance on best practices.

The main takeaway, however, is that this is a complex, multi-faceted issue connecting to many other elements of our current culture and economy.

To learn more, we have invited Paul Catanzaro to give a public talk at the Dickinson Library, 115 Main St., Northfield on April 28 at 6:30 p,m, in the downstairs community room. All are welcome — we invite homeowners, forest land owners, conservation commissions, hikers, youth, open space or watershed groups and anyone else with an interest in these questions to join us.

Together we hope to understand more about how best to meet the fearsome challenges of climate change in our region.
