FRCOG procuring bids for bridge construction

LEYDEN — The construction project to repair the Simon Keets Bridge, which has been limited to one lane of traffic since the summer of 2017, with a three-ton weight limit, is going out to bid.

The weight restriction came following an unsatisfactory inspection by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in May of 2017. The inspection showed rust and corrosion on some of the bridge’s girders.

Municipal Assistant Michelle Giarusso said the bidding process will go through the Franklin Regional Council of Governments’ procurement office. The cost of construction is estimated at $231,000. The bid process will be open for roughly five more weeks.

Town enters PILOT agreement with Moody Center

NORTHFIELD — The Board of Assessors and The Moody Center have recently signed off on a payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) agreement, which is valid through 2023.

According to Town Administrator Andrea Llamas, The Moody Center will pay 25 percent of what the full tax value would be on its property, which is nontaxable because the center is a nonprofit. The 25 percent figure was negotiated between the Board of Assessors and The Moody Center, and concludes more than a year of negotiations.

The money from the PILOT agreement will provide Northfield with revenue to put toward town services that The Moody Center would already be using, Llamas said, such as the Police Department, Fire Department and EMS.
