Behind 16 points from Kainen Stevens, the Turners Falls grades 5 and 6 Suburban League basketball team came away with a 55-49 win over Easthampton on Saturday at Turners Falls High School. 

Nine of the 11 players on the Turners roster scored baskets as the team finished the season with a 6-10 record in a fierce 5th and 6th grade division. 

Danny Widmer had 15 points in the win, with Matt Richotte adding six points and Brody Girard scoring five points.

MIAA All-State Meet

Mahar Regional’s Max Gilmore had a stellar day on Saturday at the MIAA All-State track and field meet, taking first in the adapted 55-meter dash, adapted 300 and adapted shot put. 

Gilmore finished with a time of 13.16 in the 55, 59.15 in the 300 and tossed the shot put 16 feet, ¼ inch, nearly a foot further than he did in his qualifying toss.

Volleyball

Pioneer Valley Juniors

The Pioneer Valley Juniors 17 SuNahMi team won gold on Sunday at the AAU Winter Classic Volleyball tournament in Hanover. 

Pioneer Valley went 5-1 during the two-day tournament, finishing in a three-way tie for first place in pool play on Saturday. 

In bracket play, SuNahMi defeated Mass. Premier in the quarterfinals, 2-0, then beat Max Performance Extreme 2-0 in the semifinals before knocking off Rebels VBA, 2-0, in the finals. 

The Pioneer Valley team consisted of Jillian Apanell, Lilah Evans, Lauen Gurau, Reilly Isler, Kylie Joyce, Emma Petzold, Hannah Richter, Abigail Roberts, Olivia Rosewarne, Sydney Scanlon and Michelle Zimmermann. 

Youth hockey

FCHA

Will Cowie saved 22 shots to record a shutout as the Liberty Tax Service FCHA Bantam Green team defeated Amherst, 2-0, on Sunday at Collins-Moylan Arena in a GSL 14U North Division game. 

Matt Lavoine had both goals for Bantam Green, with Hunter Smith and Eathon Bryant both picking up an assist. 

Jayson Smith, Jaxon Lavallee, Dylan Archer and Will Miskovich all played well on defense.

On Saturday, the Taxmen beat Westfield, 6-4, at Amelia Park Arena behind two goals and an assist from Trevor Kuchieski. 

Hunter Smith had a goal and two assists in the win, while Bryant and Lavoine each had a goal and an assist. 

Evan Galli had a goal while Archer, Miskovich and Brodie Gagne all recorded an assist. 

Cowie made 25 saves in net. 

• Asa Bouchard scored four goals and dished an assist to lead the Gilmore-Farrell Mites to an 11-5 win over the Springfield Capitals on Saturday. 

Mason Vasser recorded a goal and four assists in the win, with Bryce Zraunig scoring a pair of goals and dishing an assist. 

Collin Galli and Charley Knight each scored a goal and tossed two assists for Gilmore-Farrell and Finn Coffin pocketed a goal. 

Michael Mickiewicz came away with 33 saves. 

• Nico Siano had a goal in an assist as FCHA Squirt Green tied Brattleboro, 2-2, on the road on Sunday. 

Nolan Kalinowski scored a goal for Green and Chase Zraunig had an assist. Carter Schloat played well in net.

Preps

DA

Angela Osei-Ampadu continued to make school history for Deerfield Academy, finishing third in the girls 113-pound weight class at Prep Nationals at Lehigh.

In other DA news on Saturday, the boys hockey team earned a 4-3 win over Phillips Exeter. 

The girls basketball team beat Choate 50-31 to make it to the finals of the 8 School Tournament at Northfield Mount Hermon, but fell to the host Hoggers, 65-63, in the finals. 

The boys and girls varsity squash teams competed in the 2020 Head US Squash High School Team Nationals, with the girls beating Millburn, 6-1, but falling to Agnes Irwin, 5-2. 

The boys beat Milton, 5-2, and fell to Kent, 5-2. 

Colleges

The UMass men’s basketball team ended a 22-game Atlantic 10 road losing streak Saturday, beating Fordham 57-49 at Rose Hill Gym.

It was the Minutemen’s first win at Fordham since 2015. 

Tre Mitchell led UMass (12-15, 6-8 A-10) with 15 points and 19 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the season.

 Samba Diallo had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Minutemen, while Carl Pierre a dded 13 points and hit three 3’s.
