In a recent My Turn, Jonathan Von Ranson, of Wendell, said, “But I feel safe in saying the Wendell Selectboard doesn’t religiously follow the implications of global warming and apply its best solutions any more than the rest of us do.”
The only time anyone should do anything “religiously” is for a religion. In this case, the religion is the theory that climate change is an existential threat to civilization and all life on Earth. Many Americans don’t believe in that religion so let’s recall that the U.S. Constitution separates church from state.
Perhaps Jonathan should rephrase his request. But certainly Jonathan has a right to religiously follow what he believes about climate change and terminate all his use of fossil fuels including driving a car, purchasing any products produced with energy from fossil fuels, flying in jets and eating meat. I suggest that once enough people follow this path — the rest of us might consider it once we see that such dedication in not merely theoretical.
