Senior Todd Chiasson scored a tight victory at 160 pounds, and host Mahar Regional School closed out its stellar dual meet portion of the season with a tight 45-36 victory over Smith Vocational in an independent wrestling match Tuesday night in Orange.

Chiasson edged Smith Voke’s Casey Baldwin, 4-3, to snag three points toward the team total for the Senators, which already wrapped up the Suburban League North championship.

“I really, really trust Todd in a close match,” Mahar coach John Speek. “He knows what he needs to do. He was trailing 3-2 late in the match, pulled out a reversal in the final moments and got the job done. He knew exactly what he needed to do to pull that out.”

Jon Mahony needed just 17 seconds to earn a pin for Mahar at 120 pounds, defeating Charlie Winstch in quick fashion.

Henry Gilmore also scored a first-period pin at 152 pounds, where he finished off Smith Voke’s Tyler Prats just before the end of the opening frame after jumping out to a 7-1 lead.

Rounding out the winners on the mat for the Senators was Gracin Bisceglia at 220 pounds, who stormed to a 5-0 lead against Zac Martinez and eventually scored a first-period pin. The victory sewed up the team win for Mahar.

“I told him that we needed that pin to put it out of reach and he went out and got it,” Speek said of Bisceglia.

Mahar (21-6) received forfeit wins from Issa Gilmore (106 pounds), Jeff Kidwell (113), Domanic Cacciolfi (126) and Leighton Soucie (195) to secure the team victory.

Northampton 36, Mohawk Trail 18 — Jaden Moore and William VanVleet scored victories on the mat for the Warriors in a 36-18 independent loss to Northampton, Tuesday night.

FC Tech 46, McCann Tech 44 — It was the Eagle defense that got the job done Tuesday in North Adams.

Franklin Tech trailed McCann Tech, 35-33, going into the fourth quarter, where the Eagles locked down and held the Hornets to just nine points in the final eight minutes.

McCann had a pair of chances to win it late, but were unsuccessful in those attempts and Franklin Tech came away with an impressive 46-44 Tri-County League North road win.

“Another good road win for us, good win overall,” Franklin Tech coach Tim Artus said. “Any league win is a good win. Our defense was some of the best I’ve seen all year as a team. McCann is a talented team. They’re playing well, it took all of us communicating to get our rotations right.”

Bailey Young finished with a game-high 19 points for the Eagles (11-5, 3-2), and the senior also snagged three steals in the win.

Garret Cole had another big all-around effort, scoring 15 points, pulling down 12 boards, dishing two assists and blocking three shots. Justin Littlewood did all the little things, scoring four points but also grabbing 11 rebounds, getting two steals and tossing three assists.
