NORTHFIELD — Four people were taken to the hospital as a result of a head-on collision on Route 10 near the Connecticut River bridge Monday evening.

Northfield Police Officer Oleg Coileanschi investigated the accident, which closed Route 10 to traffic for an hour and an half after being reported at around 5:35 p.m.

According to Coileanschi, a woman driving a red 2018 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling eastbound on Route 10 when her vehicle crossed over the center line and struck a 2010 Honda Civic head-on. There were three people — two females and one male — in the Civic.

“It was originally called in as an erratic operator, which was the Equinox, and the caller then reported a crash,” Coileanschi said.

Three of the occupants were transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center and one was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.

“This is the second serious accident in that location in the past two months,” Police Chief Robert Leighton said.

Both vehicles were towed and will likely be deemed totaled, Coileanschi said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Northfield Police Department, and there were no charges as of Monday evening.

Members of the Bernardston Police and Fire departments, Northfield Police, Fire and EMS departments, and the Erving Police Department, as well as AMR ambulances, all responded.
