Turners Falls High School graduate Cassidhe Wozniak had her first career two-goal game for the Becker College women’s hockey team in a 4-2 loss to Nichols College in Harrisville, Rhode Island, on Friday.
The performance helped Wozniak win the Colonial Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week award for the second time this season. Wozniak first claimed the Rookie of the Week award after posting a four-point week in mid-January.
She has a team-leading nine goals on the season, which is good enough for fifth-most in the CHC and most among freshmen in the conference.
Wozniak is only the fourth player in program history to have nine goals in a season and sits five tallies short of the program record for goals in a season (14).
Wouter Hoogkamer buzzed through the 4-mile course during the Sleigh Bell 4-Mile Run this weekend in Greenfield.
The 37-year-old professor at UMass blazed to a 21 minute flat finish, good for first place overall.
Tammy Richards was the top female finisher, taking fourth overall with a run of 24 minutes, 51 seconds.
Mark Rabasco was the second runner to cross the finish line, crossing in 21 minutes, 45 seconds. Rabasco was followed by Grant Gonzalez in third (23 minutes, 43 seconds) and Kate Ashley in fifth (25 minutes, 31 seconds). Marcy Cabanas (26:15), Paul Hake (26:42), Paulina Baltazar (26:49), Patrick Pezzati (27:47) and Jackson Caron (28:14) rounded out the top 10 finishers.
At 13 years old, Caron was the youngest person to take part in the race.
Middle School
Behind a stellar defensive effort, the Mahar middle school girls basketball team pulled out a 25-11 win over Greenfield on Monday.
Zoe Naughton-O’Connor finished with four points for Greenfield, while Maggie Provencal, Stella Verlander and Abby Carlo each had two points.
■ Lucas Isrow went off for 21 points to lead the Mahar middle school boys basketball team to a 39-36 win over Four Rivers on Monday.
Morgan Softic added in six points to the winning effort, with Jack Knechtel and Marshall Ames each adding in four points.
Suburban League
Brodie Girard dropped in 12 points to lead the Turners Falls 5/6 grade team, sponsored by St. Stanislaus Society, to a 44-37 win over Ludlow on Sunday at Turners Falls High School.
Kainen Stevens added in 10 points in the win, with Jaiden Lapointe scoring nine points. Ivy Lopez had two points, her first two of the season, to add to the winning effort.
The Greenfield YMCA Tumbling Tigers youth gymnastics team traveled to the Westfield YMCA on Saturday to compete in the Mardi Gras Invitational, with Virginia Krezmien having a great day in the Level 3 Senior group.
Krezmien took first on the beam, vault and all-around and tied for first on the bars. She also placed second on the floor.
Anna Carlson-Belanger tied for first on the beams, took second on the bars and all-around and placed third on the vault. Emilia Luetjen took second on the vault and third on beam and bars in the Level 3 Senior group.
In Level 4, Maddalena Figueroa-Starr took first on the bars, second on the beam and floor and third on all-around. Zenani Himlin-Mayekiso took first on the floor and all-around and second on the beam, bars and vault at Level 8.
Lola Jones took second on bars and third on vault and all-around at Xcel Silver Junior, with Amelia Rider placing first on vault. In Xcel Silver Senior, Shelby Senn took first in all-around and second on beams, bars and floor.
Ava Garappolo took second on bars in Xcel Gold Junior, with Michaela Klempner-Siano taking third on bars and vault. Juliette Potee took second on beam. In Xcel Diamond, Grayson Bowse took first on beam, bars, floor and all-around and tied for first on vault.
As a team, Greenfield took first in Level 3, second in Xcel Silver and fourth in Xcel Gold.
