Javon Greene poured in 32 points, and George Mason used a big second half to rally past UMass, 73-63, in an Atlantic-10 Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night in Fairfax, Va.
UMass (7-12, 1-5) led 29-26 at halftime, but the Patriots outscored the Minutemen by a 47-34 margin after the break.
Greene did a good chunk of his damage at the free throw line, sinking 13-of-16 from the charity stripe.
Carl Pierre paced UMass with 23 points, while Tre Mitchell posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Minutemen look to get back on track Saturday with a home game against Duquesne (2 p.m.).
UM women fall
The UMass women’s basketball team led by nine points early but VCU answered in the second quarter and didn’t look back in a 61-46 victory in Atlantic-10 play on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center.
With the loss, a nine-game winning streak at the Mullins Center hardwood comes to an end and drops the Minutewomen to 14-5 on the season, 4-2 in the Atlantic 10.
Sophomore Destiney Philoxy was 5-of-11 from the field and had 12 points to lead UMass, followed up by 11 points from senior Hailey Leidel.
O’Sullivan at Westfield State
Westfield State sophomore Amy O’Sullivan earned a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly award as sponsored by GEICO.
The Greenfield native’s victory in the women’s 5,000 meters at the Mary Grinaker Invite earned her the MASCAC Athlete of the Week. O’Sullivan finished with a time of 17:43.35 to win the event. She currently has the fifth-best time in the nation in the 5,000-meter event.
Both the Owls’ men’s and women’s track and field teams are back in action this Saturday in the Massasoit Classic hosted by Springfield College.
KOC Hoop Shoot
The Greenfield Knights of Columbus Council 133 will hold its Hoop Shoot on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Greenfield YMCA.
The competition is open to all girls and boys in Franklin County between the ages of 9 and 14 as of Jan. 1. Age group winners will advance to the District Championships in February also at the Greenfield YMCA.
Registration begins at 3 and the competition takes place immediately after.

Middle School
Owen Carl’s 16 points led the Mahar Middle School boys basketball team to a 55-31 win over Athol on Tuesday.
Will Barnes added nine points in the win, with Jayden Delgado scoring seven points. Lucas Isrow finished with six points for Mahar and Caleb Rodriguez dropped in three points.
■ Sienna Moore scored 13 points to lead the Mahar girls JV team past Smith Academy, 39-31.
Ava Liberty scored 12 points to lead the Senators over Putnam, 36-22.
It was a solid Wednesday for the Deerfield Academy athletic department, as both the girls and boys hockey teams picked up victories.
The girls team rolled past Choate, 4-1, while the boys team scored a 3-1 victory over Kimball Union Academy.
In girls basketball action, the Big Green thumped Williston, 72-42, while the boys team fell at Cushing Academy, 69-39.
