Girls Basketball

Turners 42, Easthampton 41 — At practice, Turners’ Karissa Fleming likes it dead silent when she’s shooting free throws.

That wasn’t the case Thursday on the road against Easthampton, as Turners (2-7, 1-3) trailed the Eagles (3-3, 2-1) 41-40 with 10 seconds on the clock, but had the possession. Kendra Campbell drove the length of the court but missed a shot with three seconds left. Fleming corralled the rebound but was fouled, sending her to the line with one second left on the clock.

The senior went to the line with the Easthampton crowd making as much noise as they could, but Fleming drained both free throws to put the Thunder up 42-41.

Hailey Bogusz deflected the inbound pass to seal the independent victory.

“We’re a young team still trying to learn how to win,” Turners coach Ed Marvell said. “When you’re up 28-17 at the half and 35-30 at the end of the third you have your fingers crossed that we can pull it off. It’s exciting.”

Campbell scored 14 points in the win, with Fleming adding 10 of her own.

Frontier 47, Pope Francis 27 — After scoring just 12 points in the first half, the Red Hawks exploded for 35 points in the final two quarters of play to register a 47-27 win over host Pope Francis in an independent game.

Kaitlyn Mackin led Frontier (3-3, 1-1) with 17 points while Amelia Sobieski had seven points. Kylie Laford and Marie Diemand each finished with six points in the win.

Greenfield 53, McCann Tech 44 — Racquel Provost and Katie Haselton each poured in 17 points to propel the Wave over the Hornets, 53-44, in an independent game in North Adams.

“We struggled for most of the game,” Greenfield coach John Hickey said. “Happy we got the win, but we could have played better.”

Haselton now sits 11 points away from the 1,000-point mark, hoping to reach the mark tonight against Amherst.

The Green Wave (4-3, 3-0) were in control for the majority of the contest, but a 17-point fourth quarter from McCann (2-3, 2-1) got it back in the game.

FC Tech  52, Smith Voke 23 — The Eagles locked down the Vikings offense in the final 16 minutes of play, limiting them to a mere six second half points as Franklin Tech cruised to a 52-23 independent victory.

“We went back to doing what we do well,” Eagles coach Joe Gamache said.

Jordan Hurlbert registered a double-double in the win, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards. Emily Ryan had two points and eight rebounds in the win.

Jocelyn Crowningshield finished with 10 points for Franklin Tech (6-2, 2-0) and Desiree Doane had nine points.

Mahar 46, Belchertown 36 — Micalyn Mailloux brought her ‘A’ game to Belchertown Thurdsay, scoring 16 points and snatching nine rebounds to lead the Senators past the Orioles, 46-36, in an independent game.

Delaney Parker dropped in 14 points of her own, while Abby Henne had two points and pulled down nine rebounds. Maryanne Prescott added eight points to the winning effort.

Mahar (4-4, 2-2) trailed Belchertown 16-9 in the second quarter, but outscored the Orioles in each quarter the rest of the way.

“We just tried to win every quarter after that,” Senator coach Larry Fisher said. “It was a good team effort all the way around.”

■ Natalie Belloli scored eight points for the Mahar Regional girls junior varsity girls basketball team in a 31-14 win over crosstown rival Athol High School on Wednesday in Orange.

Sienna Moore added seven for the Senators with Makyala Mathurin and Kendrah Doane adding five each.

Natalie Apteker, Sophia Woods and Mary Simon each added a bucket for Mahar.

Reily Polana led the Red Raiders with eight points.

Boys Basketball

Baystate Academy 76, Turners 63 — The Thunder didn’t have an answer for Baystate’s Travis Jordan.

The sophomore finished with 36 points on 15 field goals to drop Turners, 76-63, in an independent contest in Springfield.

Chace Novak led the Thunder (2-7, 0-3) with 18 points while Marcus Sanders dropped in 15 points and Anthony Peterson had 13 points.
