Just one second separated the top two finishers in Saturday’s season-opening Berkshire Nordic Ski League race.
Mount Greylock’s Jackie Wells edged Mohawk Trail’s Erika Looman in the meet held at Notchview in Windsor. Wells, a former Mohawk Trail student herself, crossed first with a time of 14 minutes, 40 seconds, while Looman was right behind with a time of 14:41.
Wells helped the Mounties capture first place as a team on the day, scoring 13 points on the girls side to pace the field. Lenox was next in second place with 33 points, while Mohawk Trail took third with 58 points, followed by Wahconah (72), Hoosac Valley (82) and Amherst (121).
Mohawk’s Katarzyna Wisnauckas was the next skier across the line for her team, taking 12th overall with a time of 15:51. Liliana Manley was next in 19th position (17:03), followed by Ellie Meunier (31st, 19:53) and Brooke Looman (33rd, 20:16).
Mount Greylock also won the boys race, holding off runner-up Lenox and third-place Hoosac Valley.
For Mohawk Trail, Vincent Gauthier paced the pack with a 30th-place performance in 17:28. Daniel Tetrault wasn’t far behind in 33rd position, crossing with a time of 18:10.
FCHA results
Eathon Bryant scored the tying goal with just under five minutes remaining in the third period, lifting the FCHA Liberty Tax Service Bantam Green team to a 1-1 tie with Amherst 1-1 in a Greater Springfield League 14U North Division game on Sunday at the Mullins Center Practice Rink.
Jayson Smith and Matt Lavoine assisted on Bryant’s tally. Will Cowie made 17 saves in net while Smith, Dylan Archer, Will Miskovich, Bryant and Brodie Gagne all played well on defense.
• Elsewhere, the FCHA Squirt Green squad dropped a 7-5 decision to Holy Name on Sunday at the Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.
Chase Zraunig lit the lamp for four goals to power FCHA, while Carter Schloat also found the back of the net on the afternoon. Desmond Drake and Nico Siano picked up two assists apiece.
Brayden Thayer led three players in double figures with 11 points, and host Pioneer picked up a tight 44-41 win over Greenfield in a Suburban League grades 7 and 8 boys basketball game on Sunday in Northfield.
Kurt Redeker and Gavin Gammell joined Thayer in double figures with 10 points apiece for Pioneer, while Josh Wood chipped in nine points.
Greenfield’s Jon Breor registered a game-high 15 points on Sunday. Teammate Nico Fasulo added seven points.
• The Greenfield boys 5th and 6th grade team took down South Hadley, 44-39, on Saturday behind 22 points from Grayson Thomas.
Thomas hit three 3-pointers for Greenfield in the back-and-forth affair.
Gavin Arsenault scored nine points with Levi Dunn chipping in with five.
Middle School
The Mahar Regional girls basketball team cruised past Hopkins Academy, 31-10, in Orange on Friday.
Cassidy Boutell scored 14 points and was a menace on defense with seven steals.
Alivia Patch (six points) and Deanna Smith (five points) chipped in offensively for the Senators.
Logan Burke added five steals.
Junior Varsity
The Athol High School boys basketball team dropped a 42-40 decision to Greenfield High School on Friday on the road.
Connor Mahony led the Red Raiders with 14 points. Conal Tontodonato and Dilan Fountain both added eight for the Red Raiders.
Greenfield graduate Molley Duclos scored six points for the Wentworth Institute womens basketball team in a 64-45 win over Mount Holyoke in South Hadley on Saturday.
Duclos played 24 minutes and went 3-for-9 from the floor with nine rebounds.
Duclos is a full-time starter as a junior averaging 23 minutes and scoring 7.1 points per game for the Leopards (6-5).
