The Recorder (editorial, December 18) doesn’t speak for me when it repeats the received wisdom that old people want more “modern, spacious” and “handsome” senior centers. Not all of us harbor the regrettable, false and discriminatory belief that the old belong with, and prefer the company of, the old.
Many in my generation grew up with more inclusive values and will welcome more inclusive approaches to making this community age-friendly. If local planners want their communities to be more friendly to the old, they should spend less, not more, money on regressive institutions — such as “senior centers” and “senior housing” — that intentionally segregate the old from everyone else.
