ORANGE — “Have fun and learn” is the theme of two upcoming events that will leave attendees with the ability to play a musical instrument.

Workshops for learning to play the ukulele will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Moore-Leland Library, 172 Athol Road.

“Everyone will learn to play the ukulele, an instrument that is versatile, portable, inexpensive, easy to learn and a ton of fun,” said Dave Maloof of MusicPlusComedy.com, who is leading the workshops.

The free workshop, supported by a grant from the Orange Cultural Council, is for all ages, and people are welcome to attend both days or just one. There will be 18 ukuleles provided, and participants do not need any prior experience with the instrument. People are also welcome to bring their own ukuleles.

Maloof, a teacher, musician and comedian who hosts events at area libraries and senior centers, said the hour-long workshops will be quite thorough.

“The instrument’s history, parts, and different sizes and tunings will be introduced,” he said. “But most of the workshop will be learning how to strum, create chords and transition between chords, followed by singing and strumming to songs including pop, children’s, country, rock ‘n’ roll and more.”
