No. 4 Hubie’s Tavern might have entered as underdogs in the semifinals of the Greenfield Touch Football League with No. 1 Taylor’s Tavern on Sunday, but the defending champs showed their experience, coming away with a 19-6 victory.
Pat Viencek got Hubie’s going early, capping off two long drives with touchdown passes to Cody Underwood and Austin Watroba to give his squad the early lead.
Taylor’s scored in the fourth on a five-yard run to cut the deficit, but Viencek tossed a touchdown to Alex Bourassa to seal the win.
Jaylen Sanders had an interception to Taylor’s.
■ Quarterback Parker Hickey wanted to assure his team, Sirum, advanced to its third championship game in four years. He did that by rushing for seven and 16-yard scores early and found receiver Chris Hart for an 11-yard score late to lead Sirum to a 21-0 win over Travel Kuz in the semifinals.
Sirum and Hubie’s will meet in the title game at 10:15 a.m. at Green River Park on Sunday.
Tom Field scored a two-point conversion for Sirum and Andy Wrobolewski added an extra point in the shutout win.
Kuz quarterback Adam Bastarache rushed for 45 yards on the ground, but his offense was stopped three times in the red zone.
Basketball
Greenfield alum Samantha Smith made her college debut with the Babson girls basketball team over the weekend, scoring two points in three minutes of action in a 76-66 win over Union on Saturday.
Smith followed it up with by scoring seven points and pulling down two boards in a 57-55 loss to Western New England on Sunday.
Sawmill 10K
Registration for the annual Sawmill River 10K has begun. The race is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 1 in Montague Center beginning at 10 a.m. near the Village Common on Main Street.
Race day registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Montague Common Hall and online registration is available at RunReg.com or www.montague.net. Divisions of the race include Youth (17 and under), Open (18-39), Master (40-49), Senior (50-59) and Senior+ (60 and up). Entry fee is $30 by Dec. 30 and $35 anytime after.
