CONWAY — Surface paving of the Main Street bridge spanning across the South River was completed last week as the repair project’s first phase nears its homestretch.
According to Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokeswoman Judith Reardon, the temporary traffic signal will be removed for the winter once contractor J.H. Maxymillian Inc. completes the phase, which will involve repairs to existing beams, full-depth deck repair and paving.
The signal will be reinstalled for the second phase in the spring, when weather permits. The second-phase repair work is expected to be done in July.
Repairs under the bridge, the one furthest south that spans the South River, are anticipated to be completed in the next few weeks, according to Reardon. Repairs began on April 29.
Traffic on the southernmost bridge has been reduced to one lane since Aug. 26.
Meanwhile, repairs to the northernmost bridge were finished on Aug. 23, Reardon said. The work included concrete repairs on the abutments, joint repair, deck concrete and new pavement. Reardon said repairs are included under a district-wide contract for the two bridges.
