PITTSFIELD — Ryan Cote had to sweat out a state tournament berth.
The Greenfield High School senior shot an 83 at the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Golf Championships on Tuesday at the Country Club of Pittsfield.
“I was so anxious looking at the leaderboard, all these guys coming in,” Cote said. “When I first came in with an 83, I thought it would be close, I didn’t know.”
The top two teams qualified for the Division 2 state tournament — Monday at Taconic Golf Course — along with the top six individuals plus ties. Everyone who shot an 84 or better made the cut, so Cote qualified for states for the first time in his career with a fifth-place finish. Only those who qualified individually are eligible for the state championship individual leaderboard.
“It’s crazy to know I’m actually getting there,” he said. “It’s one thing thinking about what it’s like, but actually being there, it’s crazy.”
Two early birdies put Cote in a strong position, but he had to maintain that momentum on a cold, blustery day in the Berkshires.
“On the front nine, I made everything putting,” Cote said. “I definitely held it together.”
With the way Cote has worked this season, coach Josh Cook was not surprised with the results on Tuesday.
“He’s been working hard at it,” Cook said of Cote. “He had a thumb injury and was out six matches. He came back the last two weeks and has been working hard to get back. I’m proud of him for that. He’s the hardest workers on our team, he puts a lot of effort in in the summer to get to this point.”
He led the Green Wave to a ninth-place finish after Greenfield shot 395. Gabriel Larouche had a 99, while Dylan Archer shot a 102 and Jake Cote’s 111 rounded out the scoring.
Southwick’s Matthew Garrity captured individual medalist honors after a 78. The Rams were second as a team, shooting a 344 to qualify for states. Hoosac Valley repeated as sectional champions with a 341.
Frontier Regional School entered the tournament with high hopes after reaching the state tournament in second last year. The Red Hawks won the Suburban League West title and went undefeated against Division 2 opponents, only losing to Amherst to close the regular season.
But Frontier struggled with the greens and shot a 352 to place fourth.
“They plugged them a couple days ago, they were very fast, and they couldn’t putt them,” Frontier coach Bill Fitzpatrick said. “The greens weren’t breaking like they should.”
Junior Mikey Corduff and eighth-grader Gunnar Moore battled through the conditions to each shoot 84s, tying for sixth to qualify for states.
“I started to figure it out because my first two tee shots were pop up, push, cut, so I started hitting irons off the tee,” Corduff said. “It helped me out.”
It’ll be Corduff’s third trip to the state tournament. He qualified individually as an eighth grader and with Frontier last year. Moore also played with the Red Hawks last year as a seventh-grader.
“It’s good to have experience so I’m not as nervous,” Corduff said.
Kyle Maynard had a 90, and Porter Clancy shot a 90 to round out Frontier’s scoring.
“To make it this far and compete with this caliber of golfers, I’m very proud of them,” Fitzpatrick said.
South Deerfield’s Ben Zaranek, who plays for Pope Francis, just missed out on qualifying for states after an 85 placed him seventh.
