Greenfield native Amy O’Sullivan was the top collegiate runner to cross the finish line at the 2019 James Earley Invitational cross country meet at Stanley Park in Westfield on Saturday.
The Westfield State sophomore clocked in at 18:01.97 on the 5,000-meter course, finishing second overall.
O’Sullivan broke with the lead pack, and came out of the woods for the final stretch just behind Westfield State alumna Jessie Cardin, one of several unattached runners and one of many Westfield State alumni who participate in the annual meet.
Cardin held off O’Sullivan by four seconds to finish in 17:57.41.
Westfield’s women’s team placed third overall, with a team score of 120. Trinity College won the meet with 78 points, followed by Worcester State with 106.
Patterson at Franklin Pierce
The Franklin Pierce University men’s golf team placed second at the Saint Rose Fall Shootout in Guilderland N.Y. on Saturday.
Nate Patterson (Conway) carded a 155 in the two-day event (+13) for the Ravens.
Wesoloski at Springfield
Frontier Regional grad Emma Wesoloski scored the game-winner for the Springfield College field hockey team in a 3-2 win over Smith College on Saturday in Northampton.
Wesoloski scored unassisted at 50:27 of the second half.
Vivian Nelson and Morgan Handwerger had a goal each for Smith (3-9, 1-3 NEWMAC).
Greenfield’s Audrey Bresciano had a shot on goal for Springfield, which improved to 7-5.
12U Valley Storm
The Valley Storm lost to the Wachusett Stars, 4-1, on Saturday in Leominster Lassie League competition.
Cordelia Guerin and Hannah Gilbert each had a hit for the Storm. Maggie Fay struck out seven batters in three innings before MacKenzie Paulin struck out four in 2 2/3 innings.
Crumpin Fox Club
In the Par 3 championship, Jordan Haskell, Jason Germain and Tim Brandl tied for first place in Bernardston on Saturday.
Each player shot a 60 (gross). Chris Stoddard shot a 61 to take first (net). Mark Waskiezich, Mike O’Connell and Josh Waldron tied for second, each shooting a 62.
Hole-in-one
Robert Walker cupped a hole-in-one at Thomas Memorial over the weekend.
Walker used a seven-iron on the par 3 7th hole.
Pete Broughan and Roy Baltzer witnessed the ace, which was Walker’s second of his career.
Deerfield Academy
The Deerfield Academy football team beat Loomis, 34-7, on the road on Saturday.
In other action, the Deerfield field hockey team shut out Loomis, 6-0.
The Deerfield volleyball team lost at Hopkins, 3-0.
The girls cross country team swept Loomis and Choate, while the boys team beat Choate and lost to Loomis.
The Deerfield water polo team took a 12-5 loss at Hotchkiss.
Frontier PeeWees
Frontier stayed undefeated with a 12-6 win over Ware on Sunday.
The defense played a big part in Sunday’s victory, with Riggins Kopcza returning an interception for a touchdown.
Kodey Camp had five tackles two sacks and a fumble recovery with Konnor James also forcing a fumble for Frontier.
Ty Skroski boosted the offense with a rushing touchdown.
Nate Warger, Brody Whittle, Lucas Savage, Chase Greene, Landon LaVallee , and Gio Pastonerlo all added tackles
Junior Bulldogs
The Franklin County Bulldogs lost at Northampton, 7-6, on Saturday at Smith Vocational High School.
Nehemiah Rice carried the offense with 151 yards on 13 carries.
Gavin Arsenault rushed for 31 yards and scored the lone touchdown for the Bulldogs.
Owen Hill had five tackles on defense, with Rice and Zavyey Nieves both chipping in with four.
Shelburne Bowling Alley
Buzz Palmer rolled a the men’s high single score of 133 and men’s high triple score of 332 in the Thursday Night League at the Shelburne Falls Bowling Alley.
Colleen Barrows rolled a 111, the women’s high single score, while Tami Garland had the women’s high triple score with a 294.
Betty Schneider and Bill Schneider had the high triple score in the Sunday Scotch Doubles with a 292, and tied with Caitlin Millett and Dennis Millett for high single score, with each duo rolling a 105.
Karen Herzog had the women’s high single (113) and triple (322) scores in the Monday Night League, with Chris Rice rolling the men’s high single score (119) and Erich Prich finishing with the men’s high triple score (323).
In the Tuesday Men’s League, Paul Cohen had the high single score (137) and high triple score (351).
Angie Clark had the women’s high single score (129) in the Wednesday Night League, with Christy Moore rolling the women’s high triple score of 323.
Bob Hayward’s 120 was the men’s high single, while Chris Rice rolled the men’s high triple with a 304.
