Defending WMass champion Frontier was in need of a win to get back on track after an up-and-down start to the season.

The Red Hawks got just that on Sunday, defeating Nantucket, 3-0, in an independent girls volleyball match at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

It was a strong performance for the Red Hawk offense, which finished with a total of 31 kills and 21 aces in the 25-9, 25-16, 25-22 victory to improve to 7-5 overall on the season.

​Olivia Deane had six kills and a dig, Sophia Stilla had six kills, three digs and an ace, Sydney Scanlon had six aces and nine assists, and Olivia Rosewarne dished out 14 assists and a kill. 

Youth football

Suburban League

Davian Bala rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown to lead the Franklin County Bulldogs over South Hadley, 12-6, in a Subrurban League Junior Division football game on Sunday at Turners Falls High School. 

Gavin Arsenault rushed for a touchdown behind great blocking from the offensive line. 

On defense, Nehemiah Rice had seven tackles and a pair of sacks while Owen Hill had six tackles and a sack. 

Maziah Dandy recorded five tackles and had a sack and Arsenault made five tackles and intercepted a pass. Ronnie Stone, Benny Santiago, Bala and Jaxson Silva each had three tackles and Brody Girard and Dustin Reade each had a pair of tackles. 

• Elsewhere, Desean Carter ran for nearly 100 yards, including a 60-yard carry to the house, but it wasn’t enough as the Franklin County PeeWee Bulldogs fell 22-6 to South Hadley on Sunday. 

Bodie Burke and Desean Carter each had five tackles on defense, while Taevon Page had seven tackles and Xavier Woodard had a trio of stops.

• In other action, Chase Greene scored both of his team’s touchdowns as Frontier blanked Northampton, 14-0, in SL PeeWee action on Saturday at Smith Vocational in Northampton.

Ty Skroski connected with a pass on the run to a diving Greene for a successful two-point conversion.

Greene and Kodey Camp led the defense with four tackles apiece. Jaiden LaPointe, Lucas Savage, Billy Barbeau, Brody Whittle, Konnor James and Riggins Kopcza all added multiple tackles.

Preps

Deerfield results

On Saturday, Deerfield Academy sent a few of its teams to St. Paul’s Prep in Concord, N.H. with the Big Green coming out victorious in several games.

The boys varsity water polo team topped Hopkins, 10-9, while the varsity field hockey team defeated St. Paul’s, 3-0. 

The girls varsity soccer team defeated St. Paul’s, 1-0 and the JV team came away with a 2-0 win. 

The girls volleyball team shutout St. Paul’s, 3-0, with the JV team winning, 3-1. 

The boys varsity soccer team fell to St. Paul’s, 4-1, and the girls cross country team took second, as Winsor took first at the meet and St. Paul’s took third. 

The Deerfield varsity football team defeated Worcester by forfeit.

• Elsewhere, Maria Echezaretta made nine saves in goal for Northfield Mount Hermon School, but Worcester came away with a 3-0 girls soccer victory Saturday in Gill.

Eric Adams and Steve Jones tied with Jason Kelton and Tom Herzig for the top men’s gross score of 134 in the Two Person Scramble Championship at the Country Club of Greenfield on Sunday.         

Chuck Yetter and Dan Gavin tied with John Dempsey and Michael Duclos Jr. for the top net score of 128.

On the women’s side, Diane Carme and Raye Young had the top gross score of 150, while the duos of Elaine Goodhind and Nancy Donoghue tied with Sue Welenc and TC Emerson for the top net score, each finishing at 144.

Sean Bayer and Pat McGuire finished with the top gross score of 64 in the Blue Tee Division in an open two player scramble at the Crumpin-Fox Club on Saturday. 

Jon Shea and Ron Lowe took second with a gross 65 and Jeremiah Bayer and Dave Donoghue took third with a gross 66. 

In the Blue Tee Divison, Shane Powell and Pete Blasi took first with a gross 62, followed by Ryan Mickiewicz and Ray Mickiewicz, who finished with a gross 64. 

Josh Waldron and Jill Waldron had the top gross score in the couples division with a 77, while Jeff Sullivan and Lisa Sullivan had the top net score of 68.

Youth softball

Valley Storm

MacKenzie Paulin pitched a complete game, no-hitter on Saturday, striking out 16 batters in six innings as the 12U Valley Storm team defeated the North County Sparks, 10-0, in a Leominster Lassie League Fall Ball game. 

Cordelia Guerin had two hits and two RBIs in the win, while Hannah Gilbert had two hits and an RBI. Skyler Steele had two hits, Amelia Pierce had a hit and an RBI, Paulin had a hit, and Anna Bucala and Melanie Ring each had an RBI in the winning effort.

Baseball

Greenfield JV Pierce Bros

The Greenfield JV Pierce Bros., Land Solutions and Allstate team played three games over the weekend, coming away with two victories. 

On Saturday, Greenfield and the New England Black Bears picked up a game in the top of the fourth inning that was pushed back from Sep. 14 due to rain, with Pierce Bros holding a 7-2 lead. 

Greenfield went on to win 10-2, with Braeden Tsipenyuk picking up the win on the mound. 

David Carey had two triples in the win, and Jason Quinn had a double and two RBIs. 

James Staelens went 2-for-2 with an RBI while Michael Pierce, Ethan Quinn, Tsipenyuk, Ian Simpson and Miles Ferreira all recorded hits in the win. 

In the second game on Saturday, Pierce Bros defeated the Black Bears, 7-0, with Jason Quinn tossing six strikeouts in six innings of work.  

Jason Quinn helped himself at the plate, hitting a double and knocking in an RBI. Tsipenyuk had a hit and two RBIs along with a stolen base and Jake Petrin had a hit and two stolen bases.

Carey and Ferreira both had hits for Greenfield. 

Greenfield dropped the final game of the weekend, 11-6, to the Thompsonville Thunder in Enfield, Conn. on Sunday. 

14U

Dylen Richardson had two runs and two RBIs, but the Pioneer Gardens 14U Babe Ruth team fell to Westfield Green, 4-3, at Abercrombie Field on Saturday. 

Sam Whitney and Kyle Begos each struck out six batters in three innings of work for Pioneer Gardens. 

Davey Mazur scored the third run and Gabe Solodky had an RBI in the loss. 

Youth hockey

FCHA

Owen Willhite had a hat trick to lead FCHA (Lenois) Gilmore and Farrell Midget team over Pioneer Valley Purple, 8-1, on Sunday.

Sam Knight had a goal and recorded four assists, Evan Dubrule had a goal and three assists, Matt Willhite had a goal and two assists, and Derek Lenois and Booie Harris each scored in the win. 

Cam Rice blocked several shots on defense and Riley Drew came up with quality saves in key situations.
