Boys Soccer

Green Wave earn
first win

The Greenfield boys soccer team has made strides all season, and that progress showed on the scoreboard, as it defeated Granby, 3-2, in a McGrath League game played in Greenfield.

Theo Popusoi scored the lone goal of the first half for the Green Wave, taking a through ball from Caleb Duncan, racing in and putting it in the net in the 10th minute.

Four minutes into the second half, Greenfield struck again, this off the foot of Dante Ruggiano.

The freshman took a shot from outside the 18 and sunk it in the upper right corner to put the Green Wave up by two.

“It was a beautiful shot,” Greenfield coach Andy Rup said. “He took it, beat the guy, brought it to the left side and brought it across and drilled it.”

Granby scored on a penalty kick in the 58th minute, but the Green Wave responded instantly, as Crescens Iavorschi got the ball near midfield and sent it in to Popusoi, who used his speed to get into the box, where he juked the goalie and finished to bring the Greenfield lead back to two.

Penalties continued to hurt the Green Wave, as the Rams scored on another penalty kick in the 73rd minute, and had another penalty kick minutes later, but it sailed over the net, preserving the win for Greenfield.

“They’ve come to work every single day,” Rup said of his squad. “Even while not getting the positive results we’ve wanted, they’ve worked hard. Whatever I’ve asked, they’ve done. Got to tip the hat to them, hopefully this turns around and turns into a winning streak.”
