BUCKLAND — Regulation could not decide a Bi-County League field hockey match up between Mohawk Trail Regional and Mahar Regional on Tuesday.
Through 60 minutes of play, the Senators and Warriors were unable to find the back of the net. Mohawk had to survive two penalty corners with zeroes on the clock to preserve a 0-0 tie with the Senators.
Mahar created a flurry of opportunities in the final seconds. The activity led to a penalty corner opportunity with no time left on the clock.
On the first attempt, Aileen’s Fitzgerald’s pass found the stick of Jasmine Vezina, who launched a shot that hit Mohawk’s Gracie Hicks in front of the net.
This gave Mahar another chance at a penalty corner for the win, but the Senators did not get a shot off and the horn sounded.
“It was a little scary for a second,” Mohawk coach Taylor Shippee said of the final plays. “But I was impressed. They showed up and knew what they had to do and got it done.”
The Warriors outshot the Senators, 10-8.
“The opportunities were there,” Shippee said. “We just couldn’t capitalize on them. But it’s a huge step in the right direction. We’ve come a long way since we started.”
Isis Moon sent several balls into the offensive zone from the midfield for the Warriors.
“Getting everyone to follow suit, we need to work on,” Shippee said. “The transitioning.”
Mahar’s best opportunity came with just under four minutes to play when Fitzgerald got away from the Mohawk defense on a breakaway.
Mohawk keeper Kordaryl Kendall charged Fitzgerald and kicked the ball away before Fitzgerald could get a shot on net.
Hannah Dupont’s activity from the midfield jump-started Mahar’s offense in the final two minutes.
Mahar left wing Gracie Marsh left the game after aggravating a left hip injury in the first half and did not return.
Once the Senators got more aggressive, the offense started to flow more efficiently in the second half.
“That happened because in field hockey as soon as you touch the ball, it’s live,” Mahar coach Laurie Saisa said. “So you can go attack it. You gotta break your nose and lose your front teeth. So we started doing that and because of that instant pressure they started passing it right to us.”
Kendall made eight saves for the Warriors.
Meanwhile, Isabella Bisceglia made 10 saves for the Senators, including several in the first half that kept the game tied.
Bisceglia turned away opportunities by Mya Lesieur and Avery Dupree in the 22nd minute of the first half.
Moments later on a penalty corner, Abby Sinistore let a shot go that Bisceglia kicked away. Mohawk had the edge in corners with 13. Mahar had nine, with eight coming in the second half.
Mohawk hosts Smith Academy on Wednesday, while the Senators travel to play Turners Falls.
