My daily walk takes me by Bernardston’s new “Dollar General” Store. During the months of construction I watched pieces of trash and debris blow from the construction site into the adjoining field and along the edge of the road opposite the store.
I called the Bernardston Town Hall about this issue in early July and was told to contact the building inspector, which I did. He told me it was not really a “code” thing but he was sure they would pick it up. I also stopped by the Dollar General Store several weeks ago during my walk and asked the store manager if they would please pick it all up… she said they would. (But it remained there). So a couple weeks ago I stopped by the Town Hall and spoke to Town Coordinator Louis Bordeaux. He assured me he would have the town DPW go over and “police it all up.”
Alas, the only piece of trash that was removed was a large black plastic bag containing plastic wrappers for soda and bottle cartons. All the other pieces of debris in the grass and along the edge of the road, well over 100 remained.
Additional numerous pieces of debris in the adjacent field were baled up when the farmer hayed the field.
Dollar General leaving all its “trash in the grass” isn’t right. A “green” Bernardston doesn’t seem to be on Dollar General’s radar. Only the “green” dollar. What ever happened to being a good neighbor?
