Cultural Council accepting applications, seeking members

BERNARDSTON — Funding proposals for community-oriented arts, humanities and science programs are due to the Bernardston Cultural Council by Oct. 15.

Cultural Council member Kristina Costello said the grants annually support a variety of artistic projects and activities in town. This year, the council will distribute about $4,800 in grants. Previously funded projects include Concerts Under the Sky at Cushman Library and Tom Ricardi’s Birds of Prey at Bernardston Elementary School.

Additionally, the Cultural Council is looking to fill at least two vacancies.

The council is managed by volunteers from the community who have an interest in and support the arts, humanities and/or interpretive sciences. Members are appointed by town officials and serve three-year terms.

For local guidelines and complete information on the Bernardston Cultural Council, or to express interest in becoming a member, contact Costello at 978-413-3078 or kristinajcostello@yahoo.com. Application forms and more information are available online at mass-culture.org.

Selectboard decides on meeting posting site

LEYDEN — The Selectboard decided during its Wednesday meeting to use the green bulletin board on the rear outside wall of Town Hall as the official meeting posting site, after determining that only one official site is required by Open Meeting Law.

By determining an official posting site, the board hopes to avoid Open Meeting Law violations and confusion.

Leyden committees and organizations will still use the town website to post information. Additionally, the posting site must be at the same location as the office of the town clerk, and depending on results of the potential move of various town offices to Pearl Rhodes Elementary School, could change.

Leyden considers sign usage

LEYDEN — The Selectboard discussed parameters for what information can be posted on the town’s blinking highway sign during a Wednesday meeting.

Being town property, the sign on Greenfield Road falls under the jurisdiction of the Selectboard. Board members cited town meetings, weather emergencies or events of public interest as being appropriate for posting on the sign.

“I wasn’t originally in favor of it, but I have since found it to be a helpful tool for notifying town residents,” said Selectboard Chair Jeff Neipp.

On Tuesday, the sign indicated the increased warning level for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a disease that travels through infected mosquitoes. The sign warned residents about being outside in the evening, as warning levels for EEE in Leyden rose from low to moderate within the last few days.

Road work planned for Northfield

NORTHFIELD — Route 10 in Northfield, from the Winchester, N.H. town line heading south to the intersection of Route 142, will be under construction starting Monday. The project will involve milling and paving.

The project is estimated to be finished in November, according to a post on the Northfield Police Department’s Facebook page. Construction starts at 6:30 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m., Monday though Friday, until the project is complete.

Also starting Monday, the Highway Department will be working to replace a culvert on Holton Street.

The Police Department warns residents to seek alternate routes, if possible, and to allow for extra time when traveling through town and be prepared to stop for workers and equipment in the roadway.
