Sophomore Emma Savoy continued her strong start to the season, scoring a pair of goals to lead the Greenfield girls soccer team past Pope Francis, 2-1, in Springfield on Friday. 

Greenfield scored the opening goal of the game, but Savoy evened it up just before the halftime break. 

Eva Pruitt-Dahl was tripped in the box in the second half, giving the Green Wave a golden opportunity to take control of the game. 

Savoy capitalized, drilling the penalty kick to give Greenfield the lead. 

The Green Wave then packed in its defense, not giving Pope Francis many opportunities.

Frontier shuts outMonument

Goals by Brady Burch, Payton Sladeski and Tenzin Tsundue gave the Frontier Regional boys soccer team a 3-0 home win over Monument Mountain.

Matt Sicard and Avery Tuttle had assists for the Red Hawks.

Nick Jarvis made 12 saves in the shutout.

Athol explodes in final 45

The Athol boys soccer team scored five goals in the second half, leading to a 6-0 shoutout of Hoosac Valley on Friday in an independent match in Athol. 

Leading 1-0 at the halftime break due to a goal from Nick Bousquet, Red Raider coach Ruddy Paulino made adjustments to the lineup, moving players around to generate offense. 

The plan worked, as Bryce King scored a pair of goals and Logan Kirwan, Connor Mahony and Mark Ferrari each tacked on another. 

Bousquet, King and Maysin Tarbell each picked up assists in the win. 

Tela nets game-winnerfor the Thunder

Turners Falls and Mohawk field hockey remained scoreless into the second half until there was 14:53 remaining, as Brynn Tela found the back of the cage that proved to be the difference, with the Thunder winning 1-0 in a Bi-County game played in Turners. 

Turners had far more opportunities in the game, putting 16 shots on cage, but Kordaryl Kendall kept the Warriors in the game by making 15 saves. 

The Thunder finished with eight corners in the game to Mohawk’s two. 

Pioneer pounds Palmer

The Pioneer Valley Regional field hockey team opened up its season with a 7-0 win over Palmer on the road Friday.

Jennie Fuller, Avery Sargent and Sydney Unaitis (assist) each had two goals for the Panthers.

“The expectation is to continue to ride this wave,” Pioneer coach Sallie Gilliland said.

Fuller played set-up for Pioneer with four assists.

Kelly Baird also scored.

Kassidy DiGeorge and Sofia Walker both had assists.

Athena Fowler-Shaw did not have to make a save in the shutout.

Greenfield golf takesseason opener

The Greenfield golf team won its first match of the season emphatically, topping Smith Academy, 22-2, in a Bi-County East game played at the Country Club of Greenfield on Friday. 

The Green Wave’s Ryan Cote was the match medalist,  finishing three-over with a 39 and defeating Smith Academy’s Dan Cavanaugh at No. 1 by five strokes. 

Gabe Larouche won at No. 2 for Greenfield after shooting a 49, defeating Colin Ferrara by four strokes and Dylan Archer’s 51 earned the Green Wave their third victory, as it defeated J.J. Kroll by eight strokes at No. 3. 

With the Falcons having just three golfers, Jake Cote (51), Ruari Maloney (51) and Danny Provost (48) all won their match by default. 

Franklin Tech sweepsCentral

Franklin County Technical school swept Springfield Central, 18-0, on Friday in a Bi-County match at Thomas Memorial Golf Course in Turners Falls.

It was the Eagles’ season-opener. 

Mike McGoldrick shot a 30 on six-holes to defeat Mike Paul in No. 1 competition. Anthony Zager shot a 28 for the Eagles defeating Belinda Truong at No. 2.

Jacob Shaw (33) and Alex Shulda (31) took down No. 3 and No. 4 competition, respectively.   

Ryan Artus (33) and Jayson Smith (35) won by forfeit. 

Best of the rest

■ Two goals in the first six minutes propelled the Mahar boys soccer team past Granby, 3-0, in a McGrath League game played in Orange on Friday. 

James Temple scored the opening goal, followed by a score from Alex Currier. Both goals were assisted by Riley Drew. 

Henry Ndayisaba scored the final goal late in the second half for the Senators. 

■The Pioneer Valley Regional boys soccer team lost on the road to Sabis International, 4-1.

Noah Keith scored for the Panthers with Cam Dresser notching his first varsity assist.

Nate Cosme made eight saves.

■  Franklin County Tech boys soccer settled for a 2-2 road tie against Smith Vocational on Friday in Tri County competition.

Sam Lashtur and Dylan Mallett scored for the Eagles. 

Matt Regnier stopped four shots for the Eagles.

■ Turners Falls volleyball ran away with a 3-0 victory against Greenfield on Thursday in a Northern League game played at Turners. 

Hailey Bogusz had four aces, two assists and two kills, Dabney Rollins had five kills, Taylor Greene had nine assists, three aces and a kill and Madison Liimatainen had three aces and three kills in the win. 

For the Green Wave, Hannah Mailloux had five kills and two digs and Gianna Conte had five digs.  

■ The Mahar girls volleyball team swept Pioneer Valley on Friday, winning 3-0 in a Northern League match played at Mahar. 

Pioneer kept it close through two sets, dropping the first 25-20 and the second 25-23, but the Senators broke things open in the third set, taking it 25-4. 

Madison Harrington and Ava Liberty each had four kills for Mahar, while Harrington added eight assists and 11 aces. 

Quincey Drew had a pair of digs and seven aces in the win. 

Emily Tibbetts and Abigail Briggs each had a pair of aces for the Panthers. 

■ Aileen Fitzgerald scored with two assists for the Mahar Regional field hockey team in a 3-0 win over Holyoke at home on Friday.

Chris Vezina and Sophia Whitman (assist) also scored.

Gracie Marsh added an assist for the Senators.

Isabella Bisceglia made one stop in the shutout.
