The world lost a bright light with the recent passing of Dr. Sheila Kelly, child psychologist and longtime resident of Greenfield, well known for her extraordinary work throughout Franklin County and the Pioneer Valley. Dr. Kelly’s knowledge of children with neuro-developmental disorders — attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in particular — was unsurpassed. She loved her work and was known for her dedication to the well-being of children and for her understanding of challenges faced by parents and teachers. She set the standard for sensitivity to the entire family and how perplexing issues affecting a child affect everyone who cares about them, parents, siblings, grandparents and teachers.

In addition to her private practice, she consulted at schools, agencies, and clinics around Western Massachusetts, notably Smith College Campus School, the Common School, and Children’s Aid and Family Services.

Dr. Kelly served on the Professional Advisory Board of CHADD (Children with Attention-Deficit Disorders) of Western Massachusetts for many years and advised our national organization as ADHD was just becoming more widely recognized and gradually better understood in the late 1980’s. She helped countless children develop effective coping strategies and educated parents and teachers about management techniques for home and school.

Many parents have said Sheila saved their lives. One said, “Sheila was a gift to us and to other parents for whom the mysteries of raising our children were made so much clearer by her gentle power. She was a treasure. Her calm, loving guidance was a saving grace for children and parents alike.”

In her retirement, she co-authored numerous remarkably helpful picture books for young children and their families, dealing with difficult issues in their lives.

On behalf of families that Dr. Kelly impacted forever, we raise our voices as one to say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Rest in peace.”
