Having served on the selectboard of a small town for more than 15 years, I fully understand Greenfield City Council President Rudy Renaud’s concern about aggression directed at public officials. I’ve experienced rude, angry, threatening behavior by citizens in public meetings more than once, and on one memorable moment I had to stand up and stand between two men who were about to brawl. This kind of event produces the fear, for one’s safety and others’, that Ms. Renaud has experienced.
Furthermore to her point, every outburst of anger I’ve experienced on the board has come from a white man, or more than one. The fight that almost happened was between two white men. This doesn’t seem to be a coincidence.
It’s sad for me as a white male to say this, but the facts speak for themselves.
