Gill numbering all houses

GILL — Standardized house number signs are being installed at all houses in Gill.

The signs are reflective and mounted on a post at each house’s driveway. The Fire Department began installing the signs on Aug. 24, starting with Main Road at the Turners Falls side, and by now have almost reached the center of town, Fire Chief Gene Beaubien said. The goal is to reach all homes before the snow starts, he said.

The signs come at no cost to residents or the town. Town Administrator Ray Purington said funding was donated by the Gill Firemen’s Association, Northfield Mount Hermon School and the Greenfield Farmers Cooperative Exchange.

Nighttime closure of security gate to resume

TURNERS FALLS — Effective Sept. 3, a newly installed security gate in the Patch section of Turners Falls will be locked at night, according to a press release from FirstLight Power Resources.

The new automatic gate replaces the older gate on Migratory Way. Existing parking at 15th and G streets will still be available outside the gate.

“Restricting vehicular access at night has unfortunately become a necessary environmental protection and public safety measure.” said FirstLight spokesperson Carter Wall. “FirstLight warmly welcomes community members and visitors to continue their daytime enjoyment of this popular recreation spot on the canal.”

Beginning Sept. 3, the gate will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, including holidays. From Oct. 1 through April 30, when the days are shorter, the gate will be open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will revert to the 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. schedule for May 1 through Sept. 30.

As in the past, during weekend snow events, the gate may be closed to ensure no vehicles are in the path of the snow plow, the release states. Signs at the site will alert visitors to the changes.
