NORTHFIELD — An equipment fire broke out at the Eversource transmission yard at the Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center at around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, spurring a response from the Northfield Fire Department.
“The fire was immediately isolated,” said Eversource spokeswoman Priscilla Ress. “None of our customers experienced a power outage.”
Ress said Eversource uses an automatic switching design, allowing them to isolate the damaged transformer. Trerouting electricity to avoid the damaged section of the system. This helps avoid power outages while creating safer conditions for suppressing the fire.
Eversource is looking into the cause of the fire and checking to confirm if there was damage to other nearby equipment, Ress said.
