NORTHFIELD — The Northfield Area Tourism and Business Association’s annual picnic is Tuesday, kicking off at 6 p.m. at the Northfield Golf Club’s pavilion.
In addition to the free potluck picnic, NATABA will present the 2019 Community Service Award to Mary and Tim Bowen, owners of the Northfield Creamie, according to a NATABA press release.
Family, friends and customers of the winners are encouraged to attend, but registration is appreciated. Those wishing to bring a dish or find out more can contact NATABA coordinators Joan and Steve Stoia at 413-498-5921.
As in past years, the traditional process of reviewing nominations for the Community Service Award was conducted by a subcommittee of the larger organization, which was chaired by John MacDougall of MacDougall Financial Services in Northfield. Award winners are typically businesses, organizations or individuals who exemplify outstanding civic spirit, longevity, and a commitment to enhancing community life and attracting visitors to the area.
WARWICK — Children must submit their poems and reading logs to the Warwick Free Public Library by Thursday ahead of Old Home Days.
Librarian Ivan Ussach said prizes will be awarded to children who submit their reading logs by the deadline. The library will be open from 5 to 8 p.m. that day.
WARWICK — Library patrons will engage in a creative poetry project to celebrate the Warwick Free Public Library’s 100th anniversary in its current building.
“Pick a favorite book and make a copy of page 100 — there’s free copying at the library — then cover up all the words you don’t need to create a poem with the remaining words,” explained Librarian Ivan Ussach.
Participants can dress up their poem with artwork and submit their creations to the library by Aug. 22. Submissions should include the book title and author’s name on the front, and your name on the back.
NORTHFIELD — Dickinson Memorial Library will host “Learning About DNA” Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Wendy Wagner will discuss the science of DNA while touching on a number of topics, including benefits of DNA testing, how DNA helps with genealogy research, understanding DNA results and haplogroups.
A Note to Parents: As the school year begins, the library welcomes students at the end of the school day. Northfield Elementary School students can walk over after school. Pioneer Valley Regional School students can arrange to take the bus to the library. Most students must provide their school with a note from home showing they have permission to visit the library.
NORTHFIELD — Since the Hampshire Council of Governments (HCG) is being dissolved, the Northfield Selectboard has approved an agreement with a new energy company.
Town Administrator Andrea Llamas explained on Monday that HCG oversaw the energy credit department that manages the power credits Northfield acquired through past energy-based projects, such as the installation of solar panels and a wood pellet burner at Town Hall.
“They had been our power program to deal with the towns alternative energy credits,” Llamas said, noting that an example of these credits is a rebate the town receives for the cost of the wood pellets.
Llamas said a branch of the council will become a private entity to handle energy services. This will be called the Hampshire Power Corporation, and Northfield’s “power credits” will be transferred to this corporation.
“I don’t think much will change in terms of services or how it’s handled,” she said.
