COLRAIN — A stolen vehicle was discovered by Colrain Police early Sunday afternoon, totally burned and lying in the Green River.

Sgt. Roger Williams noticed the vehicle on one of the Green River’s “beaches” in Colrain while he was on a routine patrol on Green River Road shortly after noon.

Upon closer inspection, he found that the vehicle was totally burned. There was no one inside the vehicle or in the surrounding area, he said. Among the wreckage Williams found a partially melted license plate, so he was able to identify the vehicle.

While Williams was reporting the find to Shelburne Control, he learned that the Greenfield Police Department was at the same time talking with someone reporting a stolen vehicle — the same one Williams had found.

“The timing was perfect I suppose,” Williams said.

The incident is under investigation by the Colrain and Greenfield police departments, Williams said. He said he found no clues at the scene to suggest whether someone was in the vehicle when it fell into the river, or if it was pushed or fell in accidentally.
