The Franklin County Technical School football team will begin its season on Friday.
Equipment distribution will begin at 4 p.m., and practice will follow from 5:30-7 p.m. The team’s second practice will be Saturday from 8-10 a.m.
Frontier fall start times
Frontier Regional School announced the following opening dates and times for their 2019 fall sports season.
• Varsity and JV football will have its equipment handout Wednesday at 4 p.m. Conditioning practice will be Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.
• Middle school football opens Monday, Aug. 19 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
• Boys and girls cross country grades 7-12 begins Thursday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m behind the High School.
• Boys soccer varsity and JV tryouts for grades 8-12 are Thursday, Aug. 22 from 9:45 a.m. to noon and 5-7:00 p.m. at Herlihy Park.
• Boys middle school soccer begins Thursday, Aug. 22 from 12-1:30 p.m. at Herlihy Park.
• Girls soccer varsity and JV tryouts for grades 7-12 is Thursday, Aug. 22 from 8-10:00 a.m. and 3:00-4:30 p.m. at Herlihy Park.
• Field hockey varsity, JV and middle school tryouts are Thursday, Aug. 22 from 8:30 a.m. till noon.
• Girls volleyball tryouts are Thursday, Aug. 22. Returning varsity players, JV players and newcomers grades 10-12 will go from 1-4 p.m, seventh graders, eighth graders and newcomers grades 7-9 go from 5-7 p.m.
• Golf tryouts for grades 7-12 are Thursday, Aug. 22 at 1 p.m. at the Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
• All potential players must register on Family ID (Familyid.com) and have a medical exam, within 13 months of the first practice date, on record with Frontier to be eligible to participate. Please be aware that student athletes will become ineligible to participate on the exact day 13 months from their last physical exam date.
Turners Falls start times
Turners Falls High School and Great Falls Middle School announced the starting dates and times for the upcoming fall 2019 athletic season. There is also a mandatory fall athlete meeting the first day of school at 2:30 p.m. in the high school theater.

Co-rec
It took Fairview Landscapes eight innings to move on in the Montague Co-ed softball playoffs, defeating Travel Cuz, 10-8, Monday at Turners Falls High School.
Kyle Manley went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, Dustin Olsen and Nate Crocker went each went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Cheyenne Anderson added two hits in the win.
Kyle Bergmann had a 4-for-4 night while Tionne Brown and Jess Dawicki each added three hits.
CCG Rotary Outing
The team of David Johnson, Zack Landmark, Chris Poulos and Matt Gassner combined to shoot 59, topping the field at the Country Club of Greenfield’s Rotary Outing on Monday.
Jason Kelton, Brian Deane, Fred Avery and Tom Coffin were right behind with a total of 60.
Two teams tied for the low net of 55. The quartet of AJ Bresciano, Matt Parody, Adis Jarovic and Dan Smith tied with Sue Dillon, Lisa Bostrom, Richard Krawiec and Timberly Grout.
Northfield Two-Ball
Chris Ferriter and Ed Gareacik shot a gross 64, good for first place at the Northfield Golf Course’s Two-Ball tournament over the weekend.
Carter Fasick and Jon Fasick were second with a 66, followed by Jesse Morgan and Jason Kelton in third with a 68. Chris Zukowski and Garrett Plifka tied with Steve Ethier and Mike Zaborowski for fourth with a gross 69.
Jack Letourneau and Brian Deane had the low net score of 58, followed by Peter Blake and Brad Stafford who shot a net 59.
Dave Snow and Scott Powers had the third best net score of 60, while Paul Barnard and Rodney Ebbighausen tied with the duos of Camilla Thacher and Janet Small and Frank Penny and Paul Fisher for the fourth net, with each duo finishing with a net 61.
Letourneau won closest to the pin on No. 6 (seven feet, 10 inches), Bob Schwartz won on No. 7 (six feet), Mark Consolini on No. 15 (six feet, one inch) and Dave Ghormley on No. 16 (five feet, eight inches).
Andy Wrobeleski had the longest drive on No. 9 with a 305 yard shot while Andy Consolini had the longest drive on No. 18 (315 yards).
Monadnock Speedway
Jake Pulchalski of Whately was the winner of the Young Guns Feature No. 1 and No. 2, picking up his seventh and eighth victories of the year at the Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H. on Saturday night.
Cole Littlewood of Orange took second place in the Late Model Sportsman Race, with Tyler Leary of Hatfield took fourth.
Joel Monahan of Whately took second in the Sportsman Modified race, followed by Ben Byrne of Greenfield, who finished fourth.
Kevin McKnight looked to be the runaway winner of the 25-lap Mini Stock race, but was forced into the the front stretch wall attempting to pass a lapped driver, knocking him out of the race.
Amelia Bouchard of Greenfield earned three gold medals, one silver medal and a fourth place ribbon at the 2019 State Games of America in Lynchburg, Va. last week.
Bouchard represented the New England West Skating Club (USFS). Coaches Kathy Piteo, Tylar Suckau and Stacy Chickering attended with their students.
Keene’s Kaylin Magee earned two gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal.
Athol Area YMCA
Registration is open for the North Quabbin United travel soccer team.

Montague Mug Race
Registration is still going for the 39th annual Montague Mug Race, set for Aug. 17 at the Village Common.
The 5.5-mile race blasts off at 8:30 a.m. Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male/female finishers and coffee mugs to top finishers of each division. T-shirts are given to the first 90 runners.
Now in its 15th year, the Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35. This 2-mile course is a great scenic route around the Old South Cemetery. Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes. The course is well marked with plenty of water stops and features a few challenging hills with a run along the Connecticut River.
Don Maynard Race
The 25th Annual Don Maynard 5 Mile Road Race and 2.5 mile walk is set for Sept. 21, starting at 9:30 a.m.

F.C. Babe Ruth
Franklin County Babe Ruth League signups for the Fall Ball Program will run Wednesday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m.-noon.
All registrations will be held at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield. The registration fee is $85 for the first player, then $75 for a sibling.
The league is open to 12, 13 and 14 year olds as of April 30 and is a program for players who wish to extend their summer baseball season and gain experience on a full-size, 90-foot diamond.
