Eight local golfers competed at the 38th Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship at the Bayberry Hill Golf Course in Yarmouth, Tuesday, with seven of them advancing to the second round.
Jesse Morgan shot an even round of 72 to finish tied for fifth heading into the second round today.
Morgan shot birdies on holes six, 15 and 18 to earn the even score, and will tee off today at 8:50 a.m.
Jacob Zaranek and Ronald Laverdiere both shot plus-1 on the 18-hole course to tie for 13th. Both golfers will tee off today at 8:20 a.m.
Jake Willis and Michael Mertes both shot plus-5, putting them tied for 40th heading into the second day. Willis tees off at 8:10 a.m. today while Mertes will begin at 8:20 a.m.
A plus-6 score for Connor Piecuch and Nathan Patterson allowed them to survive the cut that occurred at plus-7.
Piecuch tees off today at 8 a.m. and Patterson at 7:50 a.m., with both trying to move up from their No. 50 position in the rankings.
Chris Bourbeau just missed the cut, finishing plus-7.
Edge Hill
Mark Graves shot a plus-5 to have the high point quota in the A-division of the Edge Hill Men’s League at the Edge Hill Golf Course, Tuesday.
Dave Cote had the low gross of 39 while Graves had the low net score of 34.
Cote won closest to the pin on No. 8 (13 feet, two inches).
In the B-Division, Jon Sonntag’s plus-9 was the high point quota, Tuesday.
Sonntag also had the low net score of 31 while Hakim Baznick had the low gross of 36.
Tom Miner won closest to the pin (13 feet, eight inches).
Thomas Memorial
George Handschuh finished with the low gross score with a 37 in Matt’s Men’s League at the Thomas Memorial Golf and Country Club, Tuesday.
Bob White had the low net of 27. Mark Letourneau won closest to the pin on No. 7 (eight feet) and Matt Betsold won it on No. 9 (10 feet).
Bill Kimball and White earned the most points in the week, gaining 6.5 points.
Co-Rec
The Hanger beat Business and Pleasure, 21-6, in the opening round of the Greenfield Co-Rec softball playoffs Tuesday at Hillside Park.
Matt Welcome and Barry De Jasu each had three hits, Brian Winslow had a duo of hits and Mike Cole knocked two doubles in the win.
Topher Gordon and Luke Lashway each had two hits while Pete Magbalinski had two singles and a double for Business and Pleasure.
Suburban League
The Turners Falls 14U softball team fell to Westfield in the quarterfinals Monday, 11-7.
Holly Myers pitched five and two thirds, striking out six. At the plate, she had a single, two doubles and an RBI.
Olivia Stafford had a single, double and a trio of RBIs while Madison Liimatainen knocked a single and a triple.
Cady Wozniak played well defensively at third base.

Bridge of Flowers Classic
Online entry for Saturday’s 41st Bridge of Flowers 8K Classic will close today at 5 p.m. There will be race day registration at the Buckland Shelburne Elementary School from 7-8:30 a.m.
As a reminder, all runners 70 and older are FREE. Kids pay their age and there will be free pizza and beer (for those 21-plus) after the race.
One change this year is the Steve Lewis Charity 3K run/walk starts at 8 a.m. with the 8K to follow at its normal 9 a.m. start.

GTA
The Greenfield Tennis Association is holding a Mixed Doubles tennis event Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Beacon Field courts starting at 9 a.m. The entry fee is 5 dollars per team for members and 10 dollars for non-members. All fees go to maintaining Greenfield’s clay tennis courts. Please bring an unopened can of tennis balls. Format will depend on the number of teams. Montague mini-camp
The competitive style mini-camp takes place Aug. 12-15 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Turners Falls High School pool.
The camp has a competitive swimming approach, and is not a learn-to-swim program. Participants should be somewhat knowledgeable of all strokes and wish to broaden those skills for competitive team swimming. The cost is $45 per swimmer for Montague residents and $50 for non-residents.
Valley Storm tryouts
Tryouts for the 2020 season of the Valley Storm softball team will be held at Merritt Field at Sunderland Elementary School Aug. 7-9.
Each tryout is from 6-8 p.m. for all players/ages. It is not required you attend every tryout date, but strongly encouraged for accurate evaluations. The 2020 Season will host 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U teams. Come check out our family and see what we’re about.
