GREENFIELD — After about a month, the Olive Street construction is slated to be completed this week, weather permitting.

Olive Street construction began on July 8, and paving will be done on Tuesday. When originally announced, the project was estimated to take two to three months to complete.

Greenfield Department of Public Works Director Marlo Warner II said the paving crew is beginning early to try to allow use of the John W. Olver Transit Center and the parking garage, but he is urging people to use the street “only if necessary.”

“We’re advising people to avoid the Olive Street area, because the work will be done a lot quicker,” Warner said.

The scope of the project included:

■The demolition and disposal of existing concrete and asphalt sidewalk and berm;

■The construction of new concrete sidewalks with granite curbing;

■Installation of ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on Bank Row, Hope Street and Olive Street;

■Installation of a bump-out and Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons on Bank Row;

■A 1.5-inch mill and hot mix asphalt overlay on Olive Street;

■And installation of a catch basin and adjustment of structures.

SVT Inc. is the project manager hired by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation; Clayton Davenport Trucking Inc. is the contractor. The town will be doing paint work like the crosswalks after the project is complete.

The work is a collaborative effort between the Franklin Regional Transit Authority (FRTA) and the city, which began in the summer of 2017. The project is funded by Federal Transit Administration funds provided to FRTA for pedestrian and ADA improvements to infrastructure near the transit center.

“We’ve appreciated working with the FRTA in order to leverage federal funds for these upgrades,” said Mayor William Martin in a July press release. “These are the final touches to the Olive Street area, now that the parking garage is complete, making this a great first impression to visitors arriving by bus or train.”
