Summer is here and in the Pioneer Valley, we have many places where families can enjoy wonderful seasonal activities.

For a short road trip to the south, check out the zoo at Forest Park in Springfield or the city’s museums. The Basketball Hall of Fame is another good spot as is — always a family favorite — Six Flags New England in Agawam.

On hot days like those expected this weekend, we have many water holes that include the splash pads at Hillside Park in Greenfield, Unity Park in Turners Falls and Look Park in Northampton. Greenfield also has the Green River Swimming and Recreation Area.

We also have many lakes such as Lake Wyola in Shutesbury and Laurel Lake in Erving, which have picnic tables and grills.

For an indoor activity, Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory in South Deerfield is another wonderful family destination, too, with over 4,000 free-flying butterflies, tropical fish and turtles along with a gift shop and lunch items available for everyone in your family.

Also in South Deerfield, hike around Mount Sugarloaf. Elsewhere in the region, Charlemont has become a huge summer destination with biking trails, white water rafting, zip lining and The Mountain Coaster at Berkshire East.

For an evening of fun, take a riverboat ride with the whole family from the Northfield Mountain Recreation Center. On quietier evenings, catch an outdoor movie with the family at the Northfield Drive-In Theatre — which is always a favorite. Or, take a trip up to the top of the Poet’s Seat Tower.

The next time you’re sitting at home wondering what to do this summer, remember how many wonderful outdoor activities are available right here in our region. Spending time with family is important — making a memory together is even better.

There is more to life than video games and television. Get outside and enjoy what the Pioneer Valley has to offer.
