Mackenzie Paulin pitched seven innings for Greenfield, striking out 13 to lead the Grizzlies to a 9-3 win over Frontier Red in a Suburban League 12U softball game, Thursday at Merritt Field in Sunderland.
Paulin allowed one run in the first, and didn’t surrender another until the seventh inning.
Greenfield produced 13 hits in the contest, scoring runs in every inning besides the second.
Greenfield’s Anna Bucala and Kylee Gamache each had three-hit, two-RBI performances, with Bucala roping a double. Margarette Howland and Paulin each had two hits, with Howland producing four RBIs.
Ellis Benitez, Addison Rotkiewicz and Stella Verlander each had hits in the win.
Ashley Taylor had a two-hit game for Frontier, while Mel Ring, Claire Kirkendall and Delaney Fifield each had hits and an RBI, with Kirkendall smacking a triple.
Olivia Machon and Maggie Potter also reached base with singles.
American Legion
One night removed from a wild 12-11 loss to Monson, Greenfield Post 81 got back to its winning ways on Thursday.
Owen Phelps drilled a two-run, go-ahead single in the top of the seventh inning as Greenfield scored four times in the frame to capture a 6-2 victory over Belchertown Post 239 in an American Legion Senior Division baseball game at Belchertown High School.
Ben Arnold tossed a complete game for Post 81 (11-4), striking out six and walking two to go with three hits.
Post 81 led 2-0 in the second inning before Belchertown (6-9) tied it in the bottom of the sixth.
Phelps, who had two hits on the night, broke the tie with a two-run single to make it 4-2, and Post 81 tacked on two more to create some breathing room.
“The guys don’t get fazed,” Post 81 manager Kyle Phelps said. “They’re resilient. That should help us in the playoffs.”
Bryan Baumann had two hits in the win, while Colin Cloutier (hit, RBI), Hunter Campbell (hit), Sam Bobala (double) and Mike Bassett (hit) all paced the offensive effort.
Belchertown’s Jacob Torna tied the game in the sixth, when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-2. Greenfield chose to intentionally walk J.B. Mills with first base open in front of Torna, and Arnold drilled him with an 0-2 pitch that forced in the tying run. Torna drove in both runs for Post 239, while Mills added a hit.
Greenfield closes out its regular-season slate on Saturday night with a home game against Northampton (11-4). The winner locks up the No. 2 seed in next week’s playoffs.
Mickey Mantle
Ben Martino, Ben Zoly and Alec Kirkendall all had two hits, lifting Frontier Alber Hearing Services to a 10-8 victory over Pioneer Stone Seals/Scotty’s in a PVYBL Mickey Mantle baseball game, Thursday in Turners Falls.
Martino and Zoly each drove in a run, while Frontier also received offensive contributions from Gehrig Brynda (single, RBI), Ben Zaranek (single, two RBIs), Tom Alber (single, RBI), Aidan Falla (single, RBI), Kevin Baumann (two RBIs) and Maxwell Edwards (RBI).
Brynda was the winning pitcher, while Edwards was credited with the save.
Pioneer’s Robby Kenyon had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Max Leh tripled and drove in two runs. Kyle Brunelle (single, RBI) and Jared Hubbard (single) also aided the cause.
Sandy Koufax
The Hubie’s Tavern West County Warriors and Westfield needed extra innings to decide the contest, with Westfield scoring six runs in the top of the eighth to win 10-4 in a PVYBL Sandy Koufax game in Buckland, Thursday.
Wyatt Edes had two and two RBI’s for the Warriors and Cam Schreiber had a hit and RBI. Tyler Dubreuil singled and Jacob Martin had a sacrifice fly RBI.
Sam Schreiber pitched six innings, striking out five and giving up three runs.
The Warriors led 4-3 heading into the seventh, but Westfield scored to tie it and keep the game going.
