The recent debates among Democratic presidential hopefuls was fascinating in many ways, but distressing in one big way: so little discussion about how to deal with climate change — THE most important issue the next president (certainly not the current one) will have to deal with. There is a movement inside the Democratic Party calling for a debate just on climate-related issues — so we can really know where all the candidates stand. So far, the Democratic National Committee has balked at the idea, but now, thanks to pressure from the Sunrise movement and other young folks, the DNC will vote on Aug. 22 whether to sponsor such a debate.

I call on the Recorder and all Democrats to urge the DNC to vote in favor. It’s past time for the media and political establishment to treat the climate crisis like the emergency it is.
