MONTAGUE – A man was airlifted to Baystate Springfield after sustaining severe injuries in an accident on Route 63.
A motor vehicle was attempting to make a left turn onto Route 63 from the Route 47 cut over in Montague Center around 4 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to Montague Sergeant John Dempsey.
The operator said he stopped at the stop sign and preceded into the intersection as he saw no oncoming traffic.
“Once he entered the intersection he saw motorcycles approaching him and tried to speed up to avoid a crash,” Dempsey said. “His effort was not successful.”
One motorcycle collided with the vehicle and the driver of the motorcycle was severely injured. He was transported by helicopter to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
The operator of the SUV had a passenger who was treated at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield for minor injuries.
According to Dempsey, the operator of the SUV was issued a citation for a stop sign violation and failure to use care in starting.
Dempsey said any further information will be provided by the Franklin Hampshire District Attorney’s Office.
