On June 15, Franklin County Pride held its third annual pride parade and rally in Greenfield. Last year was the first year I had attended any pride event, and I knew then and there that there was something special and vowed to return next year. I soon met someone who was actively involved, and when he asked me to join, the only word I could come up with was “definitely.”
As I attended my first meeting, I quickly realized that this group was different than any I had worked with in the past. Members were excited to be there, giving each other hugs and catching up on what they did that week. It seemed more like a gathering of friends than a committee meeting. Over the next four months, I attended meetings at people’s homes, at restaurants, and sometimes just five-minute discussions.
When the day came, I found myself watching people direct traffic, set up tents, coordinate equipment, and figure out solutions to problems as they arose. No one was frantic or running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Everyone was pumped and ready for a fun-filled day. The day went smoothly, the weather was beautiful, and that night I collapsed into my bed feeling exhausted, but very proud of what had been accomplished.
I have served as a member of nearly a dozen different committees and community organizations. I can say without any doubt in my mind that this crew of volunteers is the most passionate, energetic, and positive-thinking group that I have ever had the privilege of working with. I hope that members of our community who want to help make a positive change will consider joining this amazing committee. If you can’t join, try volunteering the day of the event. If you can’t volunteer, please consider donating. There are so many ways a person can help support this incredible organization. For more information, please visit >kern 0pt
