LEVERETT — Two drivers were transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, one by helicopter, following a Tuesday evening accident.

Leverett Fire Chief John Ingram said his department responded at around 6:40 p.m. to an accident involving two vehicles on Long Plain Road. Neither vehicle had passengers, but both drivers were seriously injured and transported to Baystate. One was taken by ambulance, the other by helicopter.

The driver who had to be transported by helicopter was extricated from their vehicle by the Jaws of Life, Ingram said.

The accident closed a section of the street around 223 Long Plain Road until around 11 p.m.

Ingram said Leverett received mutual aid from two Amherst ambulances and the Shutesbury Fire Department. He also said that members of the Leverett Police Department and Massachusetts State Police were on scene and that both agencies are investigating the accident.
