ERVING — Sidewalks on Route 63 through Erving will be under construction starting this week and continuing at least through the summer.
The affected area will be from Lester Street on the southern end up to Care Drive on the northern end, according to Administrative Coordinator Bryan Smith.
Most of the additions will be accommodations for people with mobility problems, like sidewalk ramps and adjustments of the sidewalks’ heights and widths, Smith said. The sidewalk will also be extended to Care Drive from where it currently ends around Erving Elementary School. A few park benches will be added, too.
The work will also include upgrades to the sewer system within the same section of road. The upgrades will allow for the eventual development of a senior housing complex, Smith said.
The project is coordinated by the state Department of Transportation. The construction company’s contract allows for the work to continue through June 2020 if necessary, but the town asked for the work to go quickly to minimize disruptions to residents, Smith said. If all goes well, the work could be done this fall.
