GREENFIELD — The “wrrrrrr” of sewing machines speeding up and slowing down permeated the activity room at the John Zon Community Center Wednesday morning.
Four local women concentrated on following patterns, producing as many reusable grocery bags as they could.
Barbara Warden, Louise Kidder, Cassandra Walker and Linda Traceski, all of Greenfield, used patterned cloth donated by The Textile Company in Greenfield to construct decorative lined bags, with either long handles for carrying over the shoulder or short handles for carrying by hand.
The four women said they plan to distribute the unique bags at future community meals as the single-use plastic bag ban takes effect in Greenfield.
They are also looking for more volunteers to make more bags on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the John Zon Community Center, 35 Pleasant St. Volunteers can use one of the machines at the center or bring their own.
