Greening Greenfield and Hitchcock Center for the Environment in Amherst

Explore Hawley Bog: Saturday, June 15 from  8:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Explore one of the area’s most unique habitats, the Hawley Bog, with naturalist Ted Watt. Learn about the fascinating ecology of this place and search for insect-eating plants, and other plants and animals that make their home in the bog. The bog is a relic of more northerly habitats that are preserved in a cold pocket of the high Berkshires. The keystone plant for this area is the Spaghnum — a moss that forms the floating mat on which the other unique plants grow. The site is owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy together with the Five Colleges.

This Greening Greenfield sponsored walk is free, geared to adults, children ages 8 and up, limited to 12 participants. Bring binoculars, wear sturdy shoes to be ready for a leisurely stroll on level ground and boardwalks. Prepare for biting insects and ticks. Heavy rain cancels. We will carpool from Greenfield and be on site for about 2 1/2 hours. Register today with Edie Heinemann at 773-465-1646 or email info@greeninggreenfieldma.org. Directions and carpool information will be sent upon request.
