The Valley Storm 12U softball team suffered a 5-0 loss to eventual champion Central MA Crushers in the semifinals of the Memorial Day Bash at Murphy Park in Greenfield over the weekend.
Sofia Holden struck out seven in four innings in the loss, while Mackenzie Paulin struck out one in three innings of relief. Madison Liimatainen and Ashley Taylor each had one hit.
On Saturday, the Valley Storm went 3-o in pool play. The Storm started out with a 13-3 win over Central MA Crusaders. Holden went 3-for-3 with a home run, triple and five RBIs. Liimatainen was 2-for-3 wiht four RBIs, Taylor tripled, Lucia Doulette, Maggie Fay and Kylee Gamache each had a hit, and Margarette Howland drove in a run. Paulin struck out seven in four innings to earn the win.
The Storm then picked up a 8-7 victory over East Coast Lady Sting in dramatic fashion as Gamache line a walk-off single. Paulin was MVP that game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and also five strikeouts.
In Game 3, Liimatainen went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Storm to a 14-1 win over North County Sparks. Howland had two hits and two RBIs, Holden had a home run and two RBIs, Sophia Pinardi had two hits and an RBI, and Maggie Fay struck out eight to earn the win.
In the quarterfinals on Sunday, Holden struck out eight batters to lead the Storm to a 15-3 win over Lakes Region Chaos. Liimatainen had three hits including a triple and four RBIs, Holden had three hits including a double and three RBIs, Paulin was 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Anna Bucala had a hit and two RBIs.
Crush results
The Franklin County Crush 10U softball team went 0-4 during the Memorial Day Bash at Murphy Park.
The Crush fell to Worcester Union Red (15-0), Central Mass Voodoo (15-3), Plex (15-1) and Berkshire Force (17-5).
Gloria McDonald and Grace Laurie each pitched well on the weekend, while Laurie, Meghan Collins, Cobi Tyminski, Sandra Johnson and Sophia Rotkiewicz played well defensively. McDonald, Rotkiewicz, Johnson, Carson Farrell, Lucja Yagodzinski and Madison Lemay led the offense. Rotkiewicz (catcher) and McDonald (pitcher) were named MVPs on the weekend.
Babe Ruth
Jacob Stafford singled, doubled and drove in a run on Saturday to lead Smitty’s Pub to a 4-3 win over Parody Builders in a Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League game at Abercrombie Field in Greenfield.
Dan Diemand (two RBIs) and Ian Simpson each doubled in the win, while Jake Petrin and Jake Whitney each had a hit. Whitney struck out 10 in four innings, and Simpson struck out four to earn the win in relief.
Jordan Hunter had two hits and an RBI for Parody, and Casey Christi doubled and drove in a run. TJ Thibeault struck out 13 in the no-decision.
• In other action, Mike Pierce, Gillis MacDougal, Chad Adams, Tyler Cusson, Dylan Camp and Kaisac Yath each had two hits and two RBIs as Turners Falls Athletic Club scored 13 runs in three innings to defeat Akey Insurance, 15-3.
Cusson gave up just two hits in five innings for the win, while MacDougall allowed one hit in relief.
Ji Reil went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the loss. Kevin Reil had one hit, and Peter Loud played well at shortstop.
Lebert Memorial
Ike Purington and Tom Herzig scored 21 points to the win the First Flight during the Lebert Memorial Tournament at the Country Club of Greenfield over the weekend.
Jim Hawkins and John Walker took second with 18 points, while Bill Fisher and Ed Pedruczny finished third with 17½ points.
Corey Johnson and Kerry Johnson won the Second Flight with 21½ points. Anthony Wonseski and Rich Young took second with 17½ points, and Jacob Morris and Norm Morris took third with 16½ points.
Cliff Porter and Dave Perlmutter captured the Third Flight with 23 points. Bill Young and Bob Lively were second with 17½ points, and Dan Gavin and Dan O’Connell were third with 17 points.
In the Fourth Flight, David McDonald and Joe Wisnewski won with 20½ points. Bill Luippold and Steve Lovett came in second with 19½ points, while Fred Gohr and Justin Wiernasz were third with 15½ points.
Ernie Patnode and Richard Howe won the Fifth Flight with 19 points. Denis Depault and Edward Sabelawski were second with 16½ points, and James Worden and Kevin Courtney were third with 16 points.
Carla Bernier and Kathy Nicoll won the Women’s Flight with 18 points. Ann McHugh and Ellen Bitzer tied Elizabeth Dolby and Nancy Donoghue for second with 17 points.
